Project Summary

The purpose of the project was teaching foreign languages not with classical methods, but with materials based on communicative skills, so that our students could use the foreign language in their daily lives. With this method, students have learned the foreign language with real life inspired materials based on communicative skills in an environment, where they felt comfortable, with no questions on their mind, such as which grammatical structure to use, the teachers more an observer than an authority, mistakes are not corrected by the authority but by themselves; so that they could use the language in real life. We believed communicative skills were acquired in environments with various materials through techniques, such as drama, role-play and improvisation. Foreign language classroom named Erasmus+ Street wasncreated in accordance with this purpose would enable students to use the foreign language in their daily lives. Our classrooms have 4 parts.
1- Shopping mall: In this classroom with materials from a mall, students are able to have any shopping dialogue.
2- Hotel& Library: In this classroom, which looks like reception, café, library and animation corner, students are able to have booking, ordering dialogues with drama, role-play and improvisation techniques.
3- Mini city: This classroom was designed like a real city with areas, such as theatre, cinema, restaurant, stadium, post office, monument and park. Students have learned the buildings, and asking for or giving directions dialogues.
4- Corridor walls: There is a country map teaching concepts such as region, city, town, mountain, and lake; a weather report; emotions wall and a vocabulary tree corner.
Learning materials to be used in Erasmus+ Street present curriculum items as latent learning materials. For example, animal and family members were taught with puppet show in animation corner, the vehicles were taught with model cars, trains in streets, colours, fruits, vegetables, price, etc.
Our mobility plan and LTT activities include one mobility action to every country, since there is Erasmus+ Street formation and control meetings in partner countries. 3 project staff from each country attended in 3 LTT activities. 1st LTT activity was in Spain, where we learnt about the importance of foreign language in daily life , as a communicative language skill. 2nd LTT acvitivy was in Croatia, where we learnt about drama technique to use it effectively in Erasmus+Street. 3rd LTT activity in Italy, where we learnt about the optimum use materials in Erasmus+Street classrooms.
The project addressed to not only students at our schools, but also their parents, teachers, and all local, regional, national and international stakeholders. With the Erasmus+ Street videos to be shared on the website, all stakeholders were informed of our innovative foreign language classrooms and teaching technique. Moreover, we emphasised the importance of foreign languages for all stakeholders with European Day of Foreign Languages Festival.
