Project Summary
The present project was born in an eTwinning project launched as the starting point of a school exchange for next year. The topic coincides with Erasmus + priorities for the year 2018, european year of culture, so the schools decided to extend the initial objectives and applied for a KA229 that may help to facilitate its achievement. The work, in previous projects, of both centers allowed them to embark on this new project because they knew their weaknesses and strengths and how they could help each other.
The main objectives of the project were:
– Knowledge and enhancement of the cultural heritage of both countries, its sustainability and preservation.
– Make European citizens taking advantage of the enhancement of their heritage
-Linguistic competence: German, Spanish and English will be used as the languages of communication. All students are studying the three languages.
– ICT Competence: Teachers and students will be trained to use new tools for the improvement of this competence.
– Mathematical, scientific and technological competence: international studies have proved that the use of computational thinking improves these competences.
-Improvement and implementation of environmental concepts from the point of view of heritage sustainability. They had an impact on the schools because they had implemented specific measures during this time.
The project was carried out continuously, working from the different subjects involved and developing integrated didactic units. Continuous virtual contact was maintained between the partners and not only between the teachers, also between the students who use had been using eTwinning.
Added to this continuous communication between the students, the most important moments took place during the international meetings. In these meetings, the students forged their feelings as European citizens. For this reason, it was necessary for as many students as possible to participate in the mobilities. So, the number was maximized increasing the number of students for travelling that had been planned at the beginning of the project.
The project also involved families, who organized cultural activities with the students they were hosting. Therefore we can affirm that the objectives of the project also reached them, multiplying the impact.
The analysis of the Cultural Heritage was done during the first year, highlighting the obvious differences between the two countries and during the second year the students had to highlight their cultural similarities and common past, analyzing the situation. Our cultural similarities and our common past are at the basis of the EU’s values.
The promotion of the European citizenship had two main moments, the visit to the European Parliament, which highlighted the great challenges of the European currently and and the participation, in the first meeting in Spain, of two former students of our schools, who are currently civil servants at the EU in Brussels, who explained how the EU works, the opportunities it offers to young people and the channels of participation in the framework of the project “Back to your school.
In a cross-cutting manner, the students’ linguistic and ICT skills have been improved by performing works, in which their commitment to the project, forced them to make an effort and improve because the final products had to be high quality.
Students have been introduced to computational thinking through workshops both locally and at international meetings.
During the visits to the German center, we have worked on sustainability issues in two ways: student awareness and also with technical meetings of the teaching staff in which German experts have advised the Spanish ones. These meetings have generated in the IES Hermanos Machado a huge number of actions with the aim of initiating the change of our center towards a sustainable center and to make students aware of the need to build a sustainable world. Among the actions carried out in the IES Hermanos Machado were: recycling campaigns, creation of a school garden, creation of green spaces, tree planting, recovery of degraded spaces, etc. These actions have become part of the daily activities of IES Hermanos Machado.
To encourage this continuous presence, long-term mobilities were introduced, the students who enjoyed them have been the “ambassadors” in the partner school. These mobilities were understood by the schools as a piloting experience, with which they could develop material and knowledge to undertake them on a regular and lasting. The long-term mobilities have created very strong bonds of union among students but also among our institutions that result in citizens committed to Europe and its principles.
The IES Hermanos Machado has applied its knowledge in quality management to guarantee the quality of the project.
Both schools have proved their capacities to disseminate the project’s results locally and regionally and, in a more limited way, internationally.
