Project Summary
The European Music Show (TEMS) is an ERASMUS+ project carried out by Alberto Giacometti Middle School (Paris) along with four other partners located in Germany, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom, all of which are secondary schools facing varying degrees of lack of motivation among their students as well as school dropout issues.
The European Music Show being over, here it is in a nutshell: about one hundred secondary school students across Europe have worked hand in hand on a musical film shot in five countries and performed in five different languages. It tackled topics and issues teenagers are concerned with. This common goal led to designing a script, writing songs, dancing, performing a number of shows in all partner cities, taking part in the shooting of a film and playing major or minor roles in it. Through this common project which offered a clear and tangible goal, teenagers from different countries opened up to each other and got to learn more about each other’s countries, languages and cultures.

• Goals:
The main aim of this project has always been to motivate students to love learning languages (foreign languages and their own national languages) through a creative and innovative approach, using the arts (musical and performing arts) and new communication technologies: the idea was to have students from five different regions in Europe work side by side and then, most importantly, carry out a collective musical show, eventually creating a music video to be watched and promoted on video sharing websites.
The structure we had initially imagined – that of a music video, has become little by little what it is today: a full-length film called “Le Monde est nouveau”; a musical which has been played in cinemas in all five partner countries.

Building towards this final goal, we have managed to achieve the following initial objectives : (1) making foreign languages livelier by getting them out of a standard school setting and using them for the purpose of a common project; (2) making the teaching of national languages more attractive by allowing students to work on texts in closer touch with their realities; (3) getting students facing dropout and motivation issues, particularly targeted in this project, to engage in activities bringing about joy and enthusiasm; (4) engaging the whole school community (all departments and levels combined, including special needs) in a common project everybody would like to join; (5) go beyond school community barriers in order to create a feeling of belonging to a European project community.
• Description of the main activities implemented
Most of the work revolved around three types of activities which were inherently related although distinct: creating, performing and shooting. The shooting took place over five weeks of five working days each in the five partner countries. In order to proceed with the shooting, the script and several music pieces and dances had to be ready beforehand. Besides several shows were presented in Paris (Ile-de-France, France), Algarrobo (Andalusia, Spain), Palermo (Italy), Alnwick (Northumberland, England, United Kingdom) and Böblingen (Bade-Wurtemberg, Germany) to allow the project to stay active beyond the periods dedicated for the shooting. The time slots dedicated to the shooting and the shows followed peer coaching sessions among students (on how to use the local language and enunciate properly or for singing and dancing practice purposes) or group rehearsals, directed by Svetlana Moreva, a musician and member of the Parisian team. The filming locations were chosen by each partner in such a way as to include the students’ daily environment and the region’s landmarks (e.g. Algarrobo, the Alhambra in Grenada and Nerja; the 14th arrondissement, and l’Ile de la Cité; the Puglisi college neighbourhood, Palermo’s opera house and Mondello beach, Alnwick and
Alnmouth, Böblingen, and Tübingen and Hohenzollern castle, south of Stuttgart).
• Results and impacts
This project has exceeded the goals initially set and one of its numerous impacts is the implementation of new exchange programmes with the same partners, beyond the ERASMUS+ project.
