Project Summary

The project “”¡Respect! – Sing and Dance for Tolerance” is a music project whose aim is to strenthen the awareness of common values and to enhance the students’ intercultural competence. Another aim of the project is to arouse interest in other cultures and to perceive cultural difference as an enrichment. During our exchange with our Spanish partners, we noticed that, in the beginning the students had problems to get into contact with each other. We also noticed that singing, as a part of our activities, could help to overcome the students’ initial inhibitions. Therefore, we decided to develop an European project around this topic.

Especially the further development of intercultural and personal skills is important and qualifies our students more intensively for further challenges our multicultural society will provide us with in the future. One of the tasks of the project “¡Respect!” is testing and documenting ways how to improve students’ skills and abilities to make contacts und to become integrated. Another purpose of this creative music project is to enhance the exchange between European schools and to include the thought of European diversity in our school routine via dance and music. “¡Respect!” will take down the cultural and communicative barriers between the students of different social backgrounds and, therefore strengthen their cultural as well as personal skills, like self-confidence and self-awareness. The project finally results in the production of an album, different dances as well as a vlog. The project concentrates on the three main points:

1. Creation or modification of lyrics concerning themes like “diversity and tolerance”
2. Dancing as an art form
3. Professional use of music and film programs

The partners of the project are the IES Manuel Losada Villasante in Carmona, Spain and the European School in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany. There are 64 students between 15 and 17 years as well as up to 14 colleagues from both schools who are involved in the project. The results of the evaluation will be used to arouse interest in foreign cultures, to accept cultural diversity as an enrichment and to optimize the project for the upcoming generations.
