Project Summary
The IS & CA project was carried out in order to contribute to the quality of life and social acceptance of refugees, to improve the professional qualifications of the English teachers, to help students to trust themselves by revealing their creative side and to make them love the school and to raise awareness on European citizenship.
The aim of our project was to increase the dignity of young refugees who are illiterate and non-linguist, to facilitate social adaptations, to encourage production and to ensure their happiness in the place where they live. With the support of the municipality, the surrounding schools and health centers, 21 young refugees who live in harsh conditions, who are at risk of escaping to other countries, have received language and skills training. A native language teacher gave a 128-hour course to meet daily communication needs. In the second phase of the project, a craftwork course was opened, allowing refugees to demonstrate and develop their skills. However, refugee students did not show their interest in craft workshop.
It was observed that, mainly with traditional, grammar based and rote language teaching methods used for years did not show the expected impact on the students, bother the students, reduce the interest to language courses and increase the tendency of absenteeism. “Active And Cooperative Learning” teacher training was included in our project in order to change the paradigms, to make teaching and learning fun, to enable the students to functionally use the language they have learned. Active And Cooperative Learning seminar was given to 17 teachers as a 30-hour seminar. All the learning activities planned in the process was recorded in a DVD and it was served for the use of teachers and all beneficiaries.
Creative workshops were opened in Turkish and Latvian schools in order to solve the absenteeism problems in schools and to make learning and to turn the schools attractive places. Our students have turned their theoretical knowledge into concrete products in co-operation, they had the opportunity to reveal their creativity, they realized solidarity and fun teamwork. Primary objective of the workshops were the students who have low academic achievement, high absenteeism and risk of leaving the school. Specialist teachers guided the creative workshops. Quality control of the studies were measured by satisfaction surveys, by monitoring evaluation reports and by comparing student absenteeism rates.The creative products were displayed with labels carrying EU logo, a statement that funded by EU and project name and logo. With the European citizenship studies, we aimed to our students and teachers to become modern, pioneer, peaceful and qualified individuals, who are against all forms of discrimination, have improved coexistence culture, are capable of empathy, have high self-confidence and are open to international and intercultural cooperation. We measured the efficiency of the studies on this issue and the awareness we developed on our target group with the attitude scale to be implemented at the beginning and end of the project.
