Project Summary

New Ways New Skills.
This project is a two year teacher training programme that involves teachers in researching their own practice, refining their skills to the end goal of enabling children to become archetects of their own learning. The project aspires to bridge the gap between theory and practice in teaching children to be successful in the continualy changing world of the Twenty First Century. For our young people to be successful throughout future changes they will need to develop flexible minds that engage in new learning for jobs that have not been created yet. This ability to understand how to learn different things in different ways is known as metacognition but currently there are few practical programmes to enable this in our schools. This project is an attempt at doing just that.
Teachers are taken on a journey where they are introduced to a methodology each term. Combining this with what works well in their current practice extends the expertise of the teacher. Digitally capturing this development and its impact upon the child is part of the programme. This becomes a form of reflective journal for the teacher as one term builds upon another that is shared with all partners. Children take part capturing their understanding of the methodology through the digital app 123 Go. This then becomes part of their toolkit to remember how to learn. The final phase is for children to teach other children drawing upon the methods they have experienced creating a learning journey for anyone in the world through 123 Go.
123 Go is an application for the Google for Education environment that allows children to construct units of learning. As such, the project aims to teach children how learning takes palce then have them construct learning for others.
Part of the project is for teachers to video lesson where they are using the techniques introduced. Thus the project allows teachers to see methodologies for teaching in practice in different contexts. Thus the project aims to be a powerful way of introducing learning to both teachers and children alike.
All of the above will be captured on a dedicated website showing the journey from professional development for teachers, to teachers putting this into practice to children taking those practices and internalising it for themselves to be co-constructors of their own learning.
The key to this programme is for teachers to learn themselves then take children through the same learning. This develops leadership qualities in both teachers and children.
Therefore the programme follows the following format.
Memory Techniques.
Blooms Taxonomy.
Physical Activity for Learning.
Philosophy for Children.
Mantle of the Expert.
Children Do It For Themselves = Metacognition.
The digital evidence will be assessed by the University of Exeter to register every school as a ‘Thinking School’. This will be finalised with Skype interviews as it is impossible for the travel and salary costs of university staff to be met within the project.
This will be a wonderful journey and the video highlights a lasting example of what children can achieve.
