Project Summary

According to UNESCO, access to information is a key challenge in today’s world. Teenagers are over-connected and swamped in a continuous flow of news items that need to be selected, prioritized and put into perspective. In France, the Department of Education has not only included this issue in the curriculum but is also encouraging schools to create a school medium.
The Euromédiajunior project involving Collège Emilie Carles in Ancerville (France), Scoala Gimnaziala N°2 in Hunedoara (Romania) and Zehra Suna Manasir Ortaokulu in Denizli (Turkey) arose in this context.
Its aim is to develop students’citizenship by studying the media.
First, it is about students acquiring academic skills (basic skills, ICT skills, language skills) and improving their self-esteem through peer learning. Moreover, cultural skills are enhanced by the European dimension of the project (self-knowledge and knowledge of others, discovering local and European heritage). Finally, it is about training future European citizens (media literacy, open-mindedness, European mobility experience, inter-cultural skills).
Within the involved partner schools, students thus studied the media during lessons or workshops for volunteers. They took part in creating a school medium in their school. French students specialized in writing newspaper articles that were posted on Twinspace and on their school’s virtual learning environment. The Romanian students specialized in radio, creating a radio programme that was broadcast in their school. The Turkish students specialized in photo and video reports.
During learning mobilities, students from the host country had to train their European partners in the specific techniques of the medium they developed in their school by working on common productions. Back in their schools, students having taken part in a mobility, in turn, trained their schoolmates in these media.
It should be noted that, in each school, the project enabled the participation of students of all abilities and with fewer opportunities : students with disabilities or from disadvantaged social backgrounds…
At the end of the project, in each school, a school medium, varying in formats (newspaper, radio, photo or video reports) is an ingrained habit. It will be continued thanks to peer training as well as the purchase of specific equipment bought on the project budget and usable in schools thereafter.
