Project Summary
Basic aim of the project is to create a 3D action adventure game, about the life of European heroes based on historical, literature or mythical characters from every country which the students will create and later play and learn while exploring and interacting with the game characters.
The students of every school participating had chosen a hero of their Country and created a part of a Video Game in a software platform.
All the parts was combined in a Computer Game which involved all the heroes and the challenges they face. The students played the role of one of the heroes created by them and made progress in the game by visiting the areas they created themselves. After extensive discuss with experts, the team of students and teachers selected Unity as the main 3D game development platform, because of the unlimited features and capabilities it has, and because of the world-wide popularity it have. Apart from unity (which has a free version), several other free (or even open source) 3d software was used for different purposes, such as Blender etc. Pupils from each country, started learning the usage of these software packages, and cooperated between each other to improve their skills and solve any technical problems addressed during these two years.
The main general educational goals following the European framework are:
1. Improving school attendance and to ensure school drop-out prevention; creating a positive learning environment, promoting collaboration within the school and outside(parents involvement) .
2. Improving pupils’ entrepreneurial and leadership skills, promoting a holistic approach to child development; enhancing parental involvement; encouraging dialogue between schools.
3. Improving recognition of gifted and talented children and increasing their learning motivation.
4. To improve key competences, such as ICT and programming skills, language and European intercultural awareness, teamwork and collaborating abilities etc
4. Ensuring Teachers’ professional development.
Specific goals:
1. To encourage many of our students who are not interested or not so good at school because the theoretic teaching was too difficult or not too exciting to them to join and enjoy the lesson, who are not familiar or opposed to Computer Games and Computers to find that there are many useful things to do with them.
2. To encourage them to search and learn issues about Physics, History, English or other Languages, Computer Programming, Internet etc while they amused themselves.
3. To find that ICT, including computer gaming is not only blast, frag and kill but a constructive experience if it’s done properly.
The planning for the Game Creation was based in creating student teams that fulfilled the tasks needed for its creation. For example, we had:
The Scenario-Documentation Team with students who searched, combined, leveraged and adapt to the gameplay story, sources which could be poems, stories, novels, myths etc
The Artwork Team (3D modelling, game scenes planning etc)
The Development Team (3D game design, programming etc)
An Outreach Team (project website creation, facebook project group administering etc)
Our students exchanged ideas, methods and even conclude with a game that incorporates principles from all the participating countries.
The final production of the 3D game was presented, tested and evaluated by the student communities of the 3 participated countries. The Unity project files was published through the European project platform and the project website, for further improving and extending our project idea by others.
