Project Summary

“Soundcheck – multiple tones in our schools ”

The Bertolt-Brecht School in Bonn planned a continuation of the Comenius-Regio-Project with Middle School Gundramsdorf in Austria for the design of a school partnership. In the context of inclusion less powerful learners from disadvantaged backgrounds needed settings in which they connect with children from other countries to improve their social and professional skills. For this reason we wanted to develop a musical stage play based on the children’s book “Soundcheck” that pupils create in project work and self-responsible learning. The objective of this presentation was based on the belief, that inclusion in school-based systems not only promotes social interaction, but is also a good learning experience for all students and promotes personal responsibility. To this end, the project was divided into four basic steps :

1. Planning phase: Mutual visits , consolidating student acquaintances and first contact with the book.
2. Second development phase : Transformation of the book into a stage play , common samples and exchange.
3. Presentation phase : Performance, design of the exhibition, presentation on the websites of the schools.
4. Continuation : Establishment of an “artistic school cooperation ” for the design of inter-school music projects (school bands and musicals)

This project led to an exchange of teachers about the different configurations of inclusion in Europe and it provided the possibility to optimize the inclusion policies in schools and thus to obtain a lasting contribution to the development of schools. This was achieved in large parts. In cooperation, the book “Soundcheck” by Elisabeth Gänger was transcribed into a stageplay, a band was founded, working groups for the design of the website, the stage design and the technical equipment were created so that the stageplays were staged in both schools. Through reports on local television and a presence in newspapers, the project had a more lasting impact. At the educational level, it was possible to broaden the range of skills on the part of the learner – the reciprocal visits, the independent planning and the management of the performances improved the competences of the learners in many respects. Now the existing contacts will be focussed, so that the musical cooperation of both schools will be continued.
