Project Summary
Wim Laboratories Iuvenis met, insofar as it was possible, the criteria promoted by Erasmus +, integrating 5 countries in a work of theatrical, linguistic, intercultural and multimedia training.
Historical context of the project: This project is the continuation of a long-standing work on memory and youth carried out by the company Procédé Zèbre with various schools, universities and European associations. A work that began in Vichy with the complicity of teachers, professionals of different disciplines, researchers, visual artists, amateur members of the company… Around this theme of Memory in the broadest sense, Procédé Zèbre invites a public as curious as ever, numerous, composed of young people and adults, united around a common memory. The audiences reached by this project are: performing arts professionals, high school students, teachers, citizens.
Most of the high schools and associations participating in this project are located in rural areas (Cusset and Saint-Pourçain in France, Oulx in Italy, Aiud and Hida in Romania, Zavidovici in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sigmaringen in Germany) with disadvantaged audiences, marginalized because they are far away from institutional cultural centres. Some of the partner countries are also in great economic difficulty, weakened by war (e.g. Bosnia-Herzegovina during the 1990s) and dictatorship (Romania until 1989). This project is a way of dealing with a financial and economic crisis, but also a political one, which has had devastating effects on the cultural ecosystem, which has weakened its activities.
Between the end of 2018 and the beginning of the time suspended by the Covid crisis, we carried out a series of courses and workshops on learning the French language through theatre. Each of these times was built within a European school institution and involved professional teaching artists, teachers and students from another partner structure. All the participants were invited to seize the individual and collective memories of the territory in which they were working to prepare a restitution in the form of a theatrical performance, to create a collective narrative, to federate the states.
Due to the heavy and (obviously) too early health and administrative constraints that weighed on us, we had to limit ourselves to six workshops.which made it possible to produce videos, and to propose times of performance in the public space. In particular, these first work periods have seen a first climax in Vichy in May 2019 during Water is Memory festival. A debate on the European consciousness of youth was organised during which the young participants were able to show the extent of their involvement and the concrete results of this project:
– Clear progress in the mastery of French language.
– Clear conceptualisation of the European dimension of our continental citizenships.
– Ease for all participants to speak in public and to use their body to carry their speech.
– Awakening of new learning strategies that are possible in the partner institutions.
We worked in rural areas, less reached by national and international cultural programmes and, by using the modern choir as an egalitarian learning and sharing process, our project contributed to the access of all to self-esteem, self-confidence and the ability to act for and on the world.
