Project Summary

For several years now, the European Prison Rules helped to operationalize all activities dedicated to detainees. Among the latter is sport. Its place and role in prisons vary from one country to another. It is the same for the supervision of these activities and the initial and continuing training of sports supervisors. We took advantage of a survey and several previous projects focusing on prison education conducted by the FR coordinating organization to focus with particular interest and willpower of investigation in a number of characteristics (give voice to female inmates to know their needs in education, education of sentenced minors, violent behavior in juvenile with penal measure, sporting and physical activities in prison, …). This interest has resulted in the development of this 2016/2019 project focusing on “Sport in prison as a support to the acquisition of transferable skills to help detainees to better prepare their reintegration into society” that would lead two comparative studies (detainees and sport, sport instructors and physical activities) based on transferable skills using pedagogical approaches centered on the individual person (eg. inmates). In addition, this project involving sentenced publics (F/M, Minors from 16 years old and over/Adults) was to observe how sport is considered, supported and organized in different European penal environments to meet individual needs through new approaches on skills development. To be able to make comparisons from several countries, various institutions join this consortium in order to be operational to make up our work to policymakers and prison managers. Thus, within the project partnership, we find on one hand Prisons (CY-DE-ES*-FI-LV-MT*) able to help to improve surveys of inmates and sports supervisors as well as justice departments and ministry (CY-DE-MT) involved in reflection so to bring contribution to a research on the topic organized by FR as social organization. LV is a public probation service able to follow the reintegration of released inmates still under probation. In terms of communication, a digital workspace was created with design of 2 logos. 4 periodic messags traced the progress of the project and return the recipients (450 contacts) to the digital platform. In terms of methodology, seminars, conferences and transnational meetings including study visits were organized. These surveys were conducted through questionnaires, designed and tested by partners, on two cohorts, first with inmates and second with sports supervisors in prison. At the end of the project (02.2019), the analyze that has been performed is uploadable from READY…GO platform, and results from implementations are groupped in an e-book that can be seen on the workspace. The recommendations that emerge from the analysis highlight and relay the good practices and simultaneously detect weaknesses. From the surveys, we are able to draw attention to the importance in variety of sporting facilities in prisons.
Our actions within the project have impacts directly on « participants/ participating organizations », « target groups » and « relevant networks ». Several results from collected data are transferable that have been compacted to achieve:
– analysis of the inmates’ needs carried directly from questionnaire to inmates in EU partners’ countries and from questionnaire to sport instructors
– train the trainer session for sports supervisors in prison
– manual for user for an APS recognition as a teaching aid in the progression of acquired (transversal skills and sub-skills), therapeutic tool to restore self-esteem, and vector for reintegration
– pedagogical tool to assess cross-curricular competences
– educational set of recommendations for decision makers/supervisors/managers in prison including for sporting facilities in all new prison projects to build in future.
(*) ES Barcelona and MT replaced ES Tenerife andt IT that were partners in initial consortium but left it even before project started.
