Project Summary
Europe Evolving -Past, Present and Future was inspired by our previous project Future Erasmus carrying European Values into the Future. Students will review key moments from the past and the present to reflect on how their actions impacts on our future. The project aims to get students to create their own shared vision of the future guided by European values and influenced by their reflections on the past and sharing an understanding that they are living through history. Participation in this project will allow students to see themselves not only as individuals but also as part of a community whether it is a school community or the much larger wider European community.
“History is who we are and why we are the way we are”. We believe this project encapsulates these words by David McCullough. It is important for us as educators to teach our students about our shared history, the good and the bad in order to create a shared positive future united as Europeans carrying our European values into the future. Inspired by the recent debates in Irish education about history as a core subject and by the current crisis with Brexit. Now more than ever we need to strengthen our European links and promote our European identity and future. Establishing strong European roots through partnership with other schools through sharing our culture and history. Bearing in mind the words of Martin Luther KIng, “we are not makers of history we are made by history” This project allows us to examine our present as an example of shared living history. Our project will allow students to experience what life was like in other European countries at key points in European history and compare it to their own. The project will take a multi media approach to creating a historical timeline by examining music, art, poetry , photos etc from different periods to tell our historical story. We are also motivated along with looking back, in planning for the future and ensuring a sustainable outcome where we work together to all do our part. Our project will include a diverse group of students . We intend to not only review our history from a National and European viewpoint through different media but also to document each mobility . We will be recording history as it happens, inspiring the future by leaving timecapsules in each mobility and preparing for the future by planting trees at the site of each school.
The aims of this project are 1. that students learn the skills required in historical research in order to develop critical thinking skills and be able to identify subjectivity and bias a skill needed in todays world where they are surrounded by Fake News. 2 That students use a multi media approach in presenting their results so that they understand there is more than one way to tell a story in a way that is accessible for all learners including those with SEN.
3. That students are able to compare and contrast our shared histories and developing their understanding of the European community and our European identity. 4. That students reflect on the impact their actions have on the world and are inspired to create a shared vision for our future.
At the end of the project it is envisaged that all results will be showcased in an exhibition that will be open to the local community. We hope to invite the wider school community, a local dignitary and the local media. We also hope to document this exhibition on our website and on Twinspace.
