Project Summary
The background of this project of developing inclusive sports in schools is motivated by the existing disadvantage of students with disabilities in Sports and sports competitions. Students with disabilities are not able to take part in school sports competition, are excluded from training and often do not take part in PE lessons. Therefore this project will encourage the implementation of an all-inclusive school sports programme. Children and adolescents with disabilities should be given more prominence in physical education, training and school sports competitions. Through exercise, sports and play in inclusive sports groups, children with disabilities can improve their personal fitness, get more enjoyment from movement and thus improve their opportunities in the future world of work and in their leisure activities. Lifelong motivation to practice sports for children with ID is the goal.
Thus, the access of people with disabilities to sports in our society is made possible or facilitated and inclusion is greatly supported by participation in exercise, sports and play.
The Special School of Ag. Spyridon Larnaka, belongs to the Department of Public Primary Education. I.C. Silea is a Public school. There are 32 pupils with special needs, aged 3-14. St. George’s International School is a private school situated in Hamm, Luxembourg which is approximately 3km from the international airport. The school has a total of 850 students aged between 3-18 with almost 350 in the secondary school and Sixth Form. Students arrive at the school from all over the world and the language of instruction in the school is English. The school has students with moderate learning disabilities who receive support in lessons.
The NMS Engelsdorf is a public school. It teaches 185 students between 10-15 years old. Students with and without disabilities are taught together in classes of the respective age group. At the school there are 25 teachers.
Several times per school year, our school organizes regional, national and international students’ inclusion sports events.
There are also training seminars and workshops aimed at the continuous training and enhancement of the knowledge of the teaching staff.
Under the motto “Sport for all with all” the social integration of young people with disability into our society should be made possible.
Through the organization of inclusive sports competitions in the schools, young people with and without ID are to be supported in joint training activities and competitions. Young people with ID can put their athletic performance achievements to the forefront in training and competition to reduce prejudices against the disadvantaged and improve or build up self-esteem in adolescents with ID.
In seminars and workshops on inclusive sports, teachers acquire the skills to design inclusive physical education classes, build unified teams, organize sports competitions and become experts in inclusive sports.
Subsequently, there will be an exchange of best practice and good examples of inclusive sports in schools. The creation and design of teaching materials for the promotion and implementation of inclusive sports in all project schools and also in their regions is also a project objective.
All of these activities are designed to ensure that people with ID, even after school, can continue to take advantage of our society’s sports offers and encourage them to practice lifelong sports.
Through inclusive physical education, building unified teams and participating in inclusive sports’ competitions, the students with disabilities gain a positive attitude to exercise, sports and play, and thus become fit for inclusion.
The completion and implementation of teaching materials also promotes and enhances the skills of the teachers.
