Project Summary

With the project “Eat and meet our culture”, the BORG Jennersdorf as leading school and three partner schools from France, Great Britain and Spain want to awaken consciousness of regional heritage and variety in local foods and eating habits.
We will be working on the following topics: health, wellbeing, socializing and local hospitality. In addition, students of all four schools learn different foreign languages (English, French, German and Spanish). Thanks to mutual communication, students will improve their language skills, learn about food and cultural traditions in the partner countries and make friends with other European students.
Teacher trainings and school exchange activities will prepare, facilitate and promote exchange of innovative teaching approaches, intercultural learning and the creation of sustainable collaboration.
On top of that, the use of digital tools will also play a major role from the very beginning. By setting up an eTwinning project, both the students and the teachers will make themselves familiar with this platform. As a result, these acquired skills will be helpful for further projects.
The main objectives of our project are:
• to promote intercultural learning
• to mutually inform the participants about our culture and culinary traditions
• to point out the impact of nutrition on both physical and mental health
• to learn about the peculiarities of local hospitality
• to strengthen the students’ sense for sustainability and environmental issues
• to develop social and manual skills
• to encourage young people to be active citizens
• to reach out to the local community by publishing our findings, thus contributing to a greater understanding of intercultural and environmental issues on a
bigger scale
• to create a strong partnership for future cooperation
• to foster learning of foreign languages
• to enhance digital skills due to interaction with our partners

The following schools will be part of the project:

BORG Jennersdorf
Students aged between 14 and 18. The total number of teachers is around 40 and we have approximately 300 students. In order to provide for a broad and extended general education, there is a core curriculum which is taught up to the final exams. In addition to these compulsory subjects, the individual school types provide for further specialization in four subject areas depending on their special focus: sports, third foreign language (Spanish), science, information technology.
Our school is located in a small town in the very south of Burgenland, which is a province in the east of Austria. The number of students is about 300.

Lycée Jean Moulin
The high school is located in Saint Amand Montrond, a city of 10,000 inhabitants. Located in the center of France, it is the only “general” high school in the area. The Lycée Jean Moulin (LJM) is made up of two distinct schools (General and Professional) with a total of 830 pupils and 140 personnel, 70 of whom are teachers.
The “General” school of the LJM prepares students for university studies by offering courses in science, literature, economics, law and social work. The “Professional” school prepares students for work in the fields of childcare and senior care, as well as community cooking.

IES Lomo de la Herradura
The IES Lomo de la Herradura is a teaching center located on the island of Gran Canaria. The main focus lies on post-compulsory education, basic vocational training of the family of Information Technology and Communications. An “enclave classroom” is dedicated to pupils with severe intellectual disability. The number of students is around 500, the staff comprises around 50 teachers, educational assistants (they help pupils with motor disabilities) and a social worker.

The 1590 Trust
Conyers School is a co-educational secondary academy in the North East of England. They currently have around 1300 pupils between the ages of 11-18 and offer a variety of subjects. There are over 100 teachers, teaching assistants and support staff. The school offers French, German and Spanish as a foreign language.

On the one hand, the methodology is based on digital tools, such as eTwinning and InDesign. On the other hand, we also focus on manual skills and intercultural learning. Different approaches will be put into practice both at the teacher trainings and during the school exchanges.

The results and impacts are the following:

Mutual enrichment of teaching skills
eTwinning project (Twinspace)
Common cookery book
Video about local traditions
Exposition
Improved manual skills (traditional cooking)
Plantation of trees and bushes

Long term benefits will be deepened awareness of the value of regional heritage. Collaboration between the partners will go beyond the duration of the project due to strengthened human relationships. We also intend to keep working with our local partners (e. g. Künstlerdorf Neumarkt, Tri-Border-Region, Weltladen).
