Project Summary
The aim of the school project in the small district of Krupina is to strengthen the competence of pupils and language teachers in order to modernize and innovate the teaching of European languages at school. To motivate pupils, strengthen the behavioral skills of pupils, improve the communication skills.
Participants of the project are pupils of the seventh, eighth and nineth grade of elementary schools from Slovakia, Sweden and Latvia and foreign language teachers. Ten pupils and four teachers (in case of Latvia two teachers) for each exchange from each school. There are three exchanges during two years. In the first year of the project pupils and teachers from Sweden and Latvia come to Slovakia, where they work on the topic “Let´s get to know each other”. The main goal of this exchange is to set up the objectives with all involved pupils, to get the image of the activities and to energize the pupils for further activities. After this exchange active communication via etwinning portal starts, which is fixed part of the project. Between each exchange pupils and teachers work on different topics at language lessons to fulfil the tasks which are set up during the exchange. At the beginning of the second year pupils and teachers from Slovakia and Sweden come to Latvia and they work on the topic “Rural life”. They work togehther at foreign language lessons at school (namely English, German and Russion) and outside of school, where they visit interesting places of rural life in the region of Gulbene.
At the second half of the last year of the project participants from Slovakia and Latvia come to Sweden to work on theme “City life”. Again they work togehther at foreign language lessons at school (namely English, German and Spanish) and outside of school, where they visit interesting places of city life in the region of Stockholm.
After the last exchange participants work on comparison of rural and city life via etwinning portal. During two years of the project they create interesting materials like videos, booklets, a calendar of activities, recipes or dictionaries in English, Spanish, German and Russion language. The main goal of these activities is to motivate pupils in studying European languages and realize that speaking two foreign languages is necessary for becoming succesful citizen of European Union. Other important aspect of the project is to show pupils that travelling brings many experiences and help them to grow into self-confident residents of their towns, where they can prosper and work in the future. Pupils get experience in a multicultural area and tolerance towards people of other nations.
Teachers improve their methodological skills and enrich lessons with new and interesting activities. At the same time they improve the management of children, improve the methodical, didactic, linguistic competence and broaden the horizons of international experience with other teachers, experience in a multicultural area, tolerance towards people of other nations.
We believe that participation of our pupils and teachers in the exchange at the European level will contribute to increasing the quality of teaching in school and problems with the lack of interest of pupils, lack of motivation and poor behavior will resolve and convert to the positive attitude to learning by the pupils. The objective is the development of moral – conservative values in approach, skills development and possibly preparing for acceptation of pupils from migrant families from other countries too.
Since the school places emphasis on sport and prepares future professional and elite sport persons, it urgently needs to strengthen and upgrade the education sector of all foreign languages in order to educate pupils – future sport persons to have language proficiency, to be able to communicate actively and boldly in European languages on international meetings and competitions.
On the other hand strengthened approach of teachers to pupils will improve behavior, motivation and concentration at lessons, but it also will lead pupils to their personal development, increase persistence in sports, resulting in the pupil, who communicates in European languages, he/she is persistent, tenatious, purposeful and achieves good results in sports performance as well as in other subjects. He/she is a successful pupil, ready to become a prospective EU citizen, who will represent Slovakia responsibly and promissingly.
