Project Summary

YES-EU (Young Europeans for a Sustainable European Union) is a project that aims at promoting the basic ideas of the EU as well as the seventeen Global Goals of the Agenda 2030 set up by the United Nations.
Right now there are hard times for the European Union fighting on different fields for common goals. Be it the Brexit or political movements against the EU in some countries. Most people still have a skeptical view towards law and politics made in Brussels but the main goals and achievements that have already been made are not seen as very desirable by many European citizens.

The project takes the experience that we gained in previous projects, in which the students designed and developed Apps, learned how to use Augmented Reality and QR-codes to design a variety of outputs. Due to the former successful collaboration, the schools involved in the project have the structure and the organisation to work in international teams cooperating together for a common goal.

There are about 80 students taking an active part in the project and they are aged between 14 – 16. They come from diverse social backgrounds and probably haven’t heard much about these goals.

To change this situation we want the students to raise awareness of the Agenda 2030. During the four meetings that will take place in Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and Germany, the students will work on the 17 goals set up by the UN and they will discover that the issues are seen from different perspectives but affect all people living in a peaceful European Union. This is why they do research on the goals on local level first.

We are going to use the Design Thinking approach because it matches perfectly with our project. In contrast to simple desktop research we aim at going back at different stages in order to rethink, improve and question the results. This keeps us flexible and we are able to elaborate our results on every level. Due to the students’ different social backgrounds we expect a diverse input taking into consideration all the different perspectives of their countries. These diverse perspectives will help us to find probable solutions for the Agenda 2030. First the students research the topics within their region/country. in a second step they carry out some surveys to find out which topics can be explored. Having fulfilled these steps at local level the students are well-prepared for the work in international groups where they have to work on the solutions and check whether the solutions meet the necessities. After discussing the topics/issues in international groups students can make necessary changes and then present the different views on the topics as well as a realistic approach to do something about these global issues.

The students are asked to prepare a presentation in the English language that informs about the group work and reveals possible solutions using digital tools including coding, apps, QR-Codes and Augmented Reality. To make this work they are going to use the icons of the seventeen topics so that the dissemination in the schools is guaranteed. There will be a huge board in each school displaying the seventeen icons to be scanned using QR Codes or Augmented Reality. Then teachers, students and parents can use their QR Code reader or our Augmented Reality account to have an insight not only into the students’ work but also into possible realistic solutions and behaviour patterns that can support reducing the problems. So there will be a long term effect that can be further developed by interdisciplinary collaborations among the colleagues of the respective schools. Furthermore, our results will be published on the project’s website, on our Twitter account and various other social media as well as the local newspapers that will be invited to report on our international meetings.
The impact will be significant since the results will be presented to different stakeholders and local and regional authorities. It will permit building knowledge among different target groups using new tools with different methodologies and share knowledge outside schools.

What’s more, all people involved become aware of the work of the UN goals, which might lead to a better understanding of the work done at international and European level and that these goals are set in the interest of all citizens.
