Project Summary

‘Energy is power’ is a bilateral project concerning ecology, and more particularly – energy, implemented by the Polish and Spanish schools. 25 teachers and 315 students from both schools take part in it, including 10 teachers who participate in joint staff trainings, 24 students and 6 teachers participating in joint exchanges of students in Spain and Poland. The low results of our students within science subjects, lack of motivation to learn them, as well as low ecological awareness prompted us to implement the project. In addition, the partner schools are aware of real environmental threats in today’s world and realize that only solid education in this field, sensitizing students to environmental problems, changing habits and attitudes can positively affect the future. In our project we deal with energy at various levels – renewable energy, energy losses, energy saving, mechanisms of energy generation. We introduce ecological ideas and projects and we offer innovative solutions, for example a project of a wind farm. The partner schools introduce changes in the teaching of science subjects and English, expanding the curricula of these subjects with elements of ecology – energy, using modern methods of work and ICT tools during lessons. Teachers and students gain knowledge in the field of energy and develop pro-ecological attitudes. They get to know modern ICT tools and apply them in everyday teaching and learning. They improve their communication skills in English, get to know professional vocabulary related to ecology, develop writing skills in English and create lexicons. Throughout the project, the students collaborate in international Polish-Spanish groups, exchanging information, creating mini-cultural projects within eTwinning and deepening knowledge about the country of the partner school. Effective cooperation and communication between the schools is guaranteed by constant exchange of emails, chatting and videoconferencing, extensive use of TwinSpace tools, virtual eTwinning exchanges, updating project websites: Twinspace and Facebook, and organizing online brainstorming sessions. During the project, Polish and Spanish teachers participate in joint trainings concerning energy and the use of ICT tools in education, deepening their knowledge and skills, getting to know modern methods and forms of work, improving English and exchanging experiences. Newly acquired skills are used by them during lessons and extracurricular activities, while working out lesson plans, creating training and educational materials. The students of both schools take part in joint exchanges in Poland and Spain. They participate in field activities, laboratory lessons, Oxford debates on environmental issues. They conduct chemical experiments, solve physical tasks, construct, program and control Lego robots and objects that use different types of energy. They conduct research, discussions, and design a virtual ecological estate. Cyclical classes of science subjects and English are conducted at the schools. Events disseminating the project, like Energy Days and conferences summarizing the project take place that are attended by teachers, pupils, parents, members of local communities and educational authorities of both schools. Students and teachers deepen their knowledge about the country of the partner school, acquire intercultural competences, such as tolerance and openness towards different cultures, as well as gain social competences – the ability to cooperate in an international group and self-confidence. After the completion of the project, the partner schools will continue to implement activities related to ecology (energy) within the science subjects and English, with the next students in the following years, introducing modifications and expanding the scope of the activities. They will participate permanently in ecological events and actions as well as promote ecological attitudes.
