Project Summary
“This is where I come from, this is where I’m going” is a project that aims at developing skills and knowledge in pupils, teachers and on a school level, regarding how migration has an impact on individuals. The project also focuses on the individual’s skills and strategies when it comes to mastering school and getting an education. Together, the two sides to the project encourage reflection on life choices and personal development.
Migration affects the three participating schools and their societies in different ways. Another thing we have in common, is that we wish to develop students with strong skills and strategies to master a demanding education and working life. Through cross-disciplinary studies on migration today and in a historical context our students get to reflect on how migration has an effect on society and on the indivudual. Through learning how migrants’ issues change with time and geography, they develop an awareness of cultural similarities and differences. Every migrant is an individual who has made a life choice, based on an evaluation of what is the best thing to do. Empowering our students with strategies to master their situation, to master school and make the best of their possiblities is another outcome that we believe this project will lead to.
The three schools, Colegiul Tehnic “George Baritiu” in Romania, IES Bellaguarda in Spain, and Kalnes vgs in Norway, each have a core group of pupils and teachers who take part in the project. For each project meeting, the schools will send six pupils and two teachers/staff. The students are mainly 17-19 years old. During the first project meeting, the schools establish a common framework for how to study migration and how to talk about and develop mastering strategies for education. The schools will then go on to organize learning activities that include researching, creating presentations, and reflections around migration and mastering school. The schools work with this in their schools between the first and the second project meeting. In the second project meeting the work is shared and discussed. This is repeated once more, before the final meeting, where the project is also summed up and evaluated.
We believe that the students involved in the project will gain knowledge and the ability to reflect on a number of issues regarding migration. We also hope to develop students that are empowered by skills and strategies that help them succeed in their studies and make them make good choices. On a school level, we hope that the project will give us experiences and insights that will have an impact on how we guide our future students and enable them to make good choices.
