Project Summary

One of the main aims of the European Union, and a sub-political goal of the Swedish government, is that all young people should have good living conditions, power to shape their lives and influence over social development; thus reducing poverty, enhancing social inclusion and increasing the workforce in the EU. There is a focus on entrepreneurship to reduce unemployment and social exclusion for young adults and young adults with special needs. But how should this work in reality? It has to be clear what skills a NEET entrepreneur needs in various parts of Europe and how to acquire those skills, and what other methods and parameters around the entrepreneur are needed for a successful integration into the labour market and social inclusion.

The partners in this project have worked hands-on with hundreds of young adults from the target group NEETs in internships since 2010 within European funded mobility projects. We have tried out individual and situational methods to strengthen soft skills and personal development in order for the participants to be successful in their internship/job and all other aspects of their lives. According to “Temagruppen Unga i arbetslivet”, INDIVIDUAL ADAPTATION is an absolute necessity for the participants of ESF funded projects to achieve success (Two empty hands; entrepreneurship in labor market projects with support from ESF p. 24).

Now we want to transfer our experience into methods. And study, research, categorise/classify and transform these practical methods into learning environments applicable to NEETs and entrepreneurship, didactically and methodically prepared into a method catalogue for supervisors working with the target group in projects, education, internships, in the work place, mobilities and other situations where a supervisor need support with guidance of the NEET target group into entrepreneurship. We haven’t found a compilation of tools around HOW in practice to work with NEET/Entrepreneurship, hence our catalogue will shed some light in a grey zone.

How is entrepreneurship defined in the participating countries? What differences are there? Similarities? What parameters are relevant in each partner country? What are the parameters for success in entrepreneurship for the target group in northern, western, southern and eastern Europe? Is European matching a possibility also within entrepreneurship for NEETs? We will find out! The project will benefit from its transnational character, the project output will reflect upon and can contribute to the national as well as European discussion of the NEET- and entrepreneurship situation.

The methodically designed non-formal learning environments are systemised and didactically processed and described for supervisors and pedagogical staff and can inspire supervisors in entrepreneurship/schools/education/pedagogics/vocational training/internship/employer/work place to better plan the work with the target group. Through inspiration and guidance from the method catalogue, the planning of non-formal learning and personality development of the individual can be systemised and more focused, making the supervisors work easier and more effective. Through the focus on entrepreneurship, we believe more NEETs can find a way back into society and into the labour market; after 8 years of experience and 11,000 NEETs Europewide we know that ca 50-60% manage to reintegrate into education and labour market after the participation in the transnational IdA mobilities. If we increase support with Entrepreneurial fokus, we expect an increase of NEET integration into the labour market/society with 1 or 2 more individuals per group of 10.

Focus of the project;
(1) create a method directory for learning environments with a focus on entrepreneurship (based on research, best practice, classification of best practice and transformation of methods into learning environments, explicitly described for practical use)
(2) test the result in a pilot group directly with the target group within the framework of the project and
(3) disseminate, implement, promote and make the results available in our network and european, national, regional and local youth work platforms.

Through project collaboration, participating partners increase their competence, strengthen European cohesion and cooperation and creates a common platform and approach for the target group NEET and Entrepreneurship. At a strategic level, our project strengthens the work of the youth sector Europe-wide through a more focused approach and opens up for entrepreneurship for a new target group.

Ultimately, we expect the youth work through our learning environments to help more young people from the defined target group to resume education, jobs or start their career as an entrepreneur and thereby again become an active player in society and democracy.
