Project Summary
Globalization influences life and politics in the 21st century to a special degree. This term seems like a dense fog to many people and appears to be a threat that is hardly comprehensible. If nothing else that leads to dissatisfaction. This project aims at vitalizing the term with the help of students’ projects making it more tangible with the aid of an intercultural exchange. The experience gained will be carried out among the students of Stockholm and Freiburg. 15 sixth-form students at a time, from each Upplands Bro High School in Stockholm (more precisely Kungsängen, a suburb of Stockholm) and Walter-Eucken-Gymnasium in Freiburg, will work on comparable or even similar projects to examine different phenomena of globalization. Within the framework of the seminar course “Globalization in Everyday Life” the students of Walter-Eucken-Gymnasium should have dealed intensively with the practical aspects of globalization and examined these on chosen examples of Sweden and Germany. Meanwhile, the students of Upplands-Bro High School should have worked in a similar course with similar topics (e.g. sustainability in forestry, educational systems in Germany and Sweden, ramifications of the refugee crisis, Spotify’s marketing strategies) together with the German students starting with eTwinning, Facebook, WhatsApp or via email followed by visits at their partner school. These was scheduled for spring 2020 in Freiburg first, and then in Stockholm. Students were asked to exchange their ideas frequently and do on-site research in Stockholm and Freiburg and visit/interview actors of globalization. The students should have stayed at host families in Sweden and Germany to foster the intercultural experience. Unfortunately it wasn’t possible to realise this project as planed because of the pandemic situation. A real exchange wasn’t allowed and so we planed a virtual exchange that also affects the globalisation but with the main emphasis on the Corona pandemic.
The main target of the project was to make the phenomenon of globalization visible. Not only local research in Freiburg or Stockholm shoud have assisted but also by illuminating the internationalized web of globalization will picture a vivid image of the aforementioned dense fog of the term. However, now the target was that the students in Stockholm and Freiburg discussed and researched about the effects of the Corona pandemic on the individual life, on the Swedish and German society and on the world by exchanging virtually.
