Project Summary
Background: Background: ES’s school’s 50th anniversary provided the key to research how education and schools have been transformed as a reflection of changes in these 50 years; hence, we realized that school subjects in 70’s were mainly related to tradition and ordinary life and schools had strong roots in communities; these days, there has been a breach in confidence between schools and families (no Parents’ Association at ES school, for example) due to among other facts, subjects are now very distant from families’ experiences and capacities. Therefore, together with schools from IT, BG,PO, TR & IE , sharing same issues, we considered that researching relevant areas concerning heritage as essential in the creation of societies & education , we would be able to draw actors other than teachers as students’ source of information and indirectly, we would bring school & families together.
Objectives: We expect students to appreciate that education can be found outside schools , to acknowledge that former generations can be providers of education and to diminish the gap between generations by revising what has changed and what remains essentially the same. By turning students’ own families, fellow townspeople and teachers into subjects of study, we also hope to make pupils change their perception of schools, acknowledge their culture and bring families back to school life when they understand that their contribution will always be welcomed; as well, we want our students to acquire new social ,communication and instrumental skills. In year 1, topics are closely related to ‘doing’ so they grasp essence of non-formal education: traditional food, dancing, singing , jobs, changes in towns and World Heritage; in year 2, topics are more theoretical, changes in role of women and education but activities are planned to keep students motivated :drama and games/toys.
Participants: project will be implemented by Erasmus teams in all six schools , around 15-30 students , from different cultural/social backgrounds and 4-8 teachers; nevertheless, activities of interviewing/ finding relatives, artisans, women, associations will open to all students at schools; results will be presented to other students/teachers at school, even to other schools, so number of original and ‘added’ participants will extend to whole partner schools. We also expect intense collaboration with townspeople, families and associations of old people and women.
Activities: There will be preparation activities in which participants contact townspeople with experience in addressed topics; the project will be presented to school , families and local authorities. Activities in partner countries will consist of video presentations of partner students of all their findings in traditional food, folklore, jobs, heritage, the role of women and schools/ education and examples of changes ; each partner school will find two samples of recipes, one surviving, one lost, two traditional songs and dances, a research on old jobs and items produced; will find out old and new plans and photos of their towns schools and heritage sites; they will interview women to appreciate the changes in their roles; all participant students will join in a farewell party. Host countries organize visit to relevant places related to topics addressed; teachers meet to review agenda and evaluate implementation of project. In all host countries, there will be visits to authorities and dissemination activities .Methodology: There will be a continuous feedback among partners through google group ; as regards disseminations, depending on country, Facebook and Twitter accounts could be opened , apart from local newspapers, TV &radio stations ;final product, a magazine, will be main , long-lasting dissemination tool .Project webpage, run by coordinating school, will be updated after activities and will include digital copies of all the tasks in charge of rest of partners; it will include link to rest of schools’ websites.
Results/ impact: Social inclusion will be increased by addressing all types of families and jobs .Students will also improve communication skills in English and native languages new ITC&Maths skills by means of surveys and statistics, they will learn healthier, not sedentary ways of life when they apply their findings on traditional food, jobs, games, dances and handcraft; they will recognize importance of education in our societies’ progress and that role of women is also evolving due to new sensibility in citizens; they will increase their self-esteem .
In the long term, this project will promote contact and exchange of ideas among students&teachers of different countries, will improve participants awareness of European citizenship, make them realize the importance of team work, increase self-confidence, motivate them for learning and teaching; other stakeholders, local, regional authorities, old people&women’s’ association’s and parents will be more active in schools’ life.
