Project Summary

The aim of the Curating in Context project is to develop curatorial training with a strong focus on social impact through the involvement of local, regional and international actors, targeting individuals as well as cultural and civic organisations. The project aims to create educational resources and methods for use within the university and for the further education of cultural workers and citizens through strategies resulting from practices of performing arts and curators. Through methods of cross-pollination of know-how and best practices from the performing arts and civil society, the project also aims to collate the impact of the cultural and civil sectors on society.

The consortium of Curating in Context consists of the NGOs Tanzfabrik Berlin and Lokomotiva, Skopje, as well as the Higher Education Institutions Stockholm University of the Arts and University of Zagreb.

New formats of creating, presenting, disseminating and valorising artistic works are needed to match current local and global entanglements. Curating in Context will create knowledge and opportunities for future curators to critically reflect and address different socio-political and economic contexts and develop curatorial methods to rethink the practices of performing arts in relation to the civil sector.

Curating in Context aims to provide key competences and skills through which to:
• navigate between institutions, art organisations, civil society and the free-lance sector,
• enable and support sustainable self-employability,
• innovate fund-raising capabilities,
• manage artist led initiatives,
• create educational material that highlights reflection and engagement with art through context related perspectives such as production conditions, programming, organisation, governance, artistic practice and culture, the economy, the socio-political and cultural environment, and other institutional structures.

The Intellectual Outputs addressed in the project are:
1. Curating in Context – Manual /handbook/guidance material
Material that serves as reference for the developed manual/handbook/guidance itself will be available beyond the completion of the project as compendium for curatorial practice. Another, overall outcome of the project is the development of innovative visions and training methods to be implemented in academies and educational offer of NGOs on a long-term basis.

2. Curating in Context – Open Education Resource Platform
A Open Education Resource Platform suitable for education and training in HEI and NGO environments available beyond the completion of the project. Its content relates to interdisciplinary, academic and cross- sectorial approaches and methods through curating that allow to interlink specific local contexts with international perspectives. It will be published as a website linked to websites of each partner institution and other key stakeholders.

3. Curating in Context – Design and development of course/curriculum
A sustainable course/curriculum “Curating in context” for students and teachers to provide long-term cooperation and continuous dialogue and development. The course/curriculum, consisting in 7.5 ECTS, will be developed and tested by all partners during the project lifetime and will be integrated into their educational offer and individual curricula at all partner organisations.

Curating in context is addressing the following target groups:
1. MA students, teachers and alumni of our Higher Education Institutions
2. Mid-career artists
3. Cultural workers
4. Employees in the civic sector

On a broader scale, the project aims at strengthening the links between education, training and the professional environment in the civic and cultural sectors, opening of the partnering academic institutions towards the “invisible” knowledge of self-organising, local engagement and transversal learning. Furthermore, it aims at increasing the institutional ability to dialogue and support artists, art organisations and local initiatives in all partner countries as well as increasing mutual understanding of local and international differences and perspectives. Last but not least it will increase the exchange of best practices between northern, western, and south eastern European regions.
