Project Summary

Today, language training organizations welcome refugees who have not received, or only very little, schooling in their country of origin. Their journey of settlement on European territory necessarily includes many hours of training with a first phase of entry into the language and written language that is quite long.

Bibliodos aims to provide them with a first reading offer. The first ambition of the project is to combine the learning of a European language with the promotion of reading and the discovery of European heritage by combining literature and artistic works. We want to develop the first universal European library, i.e. really accessible to people who do not have access to the written word (migrants, low-skilled adults, including those with disabilities). We are convinced that by promoting access to the European heritage, we contribute to promoting social inclusion, personal development and therefore access to the labour market.

The Bibliodos universal digital library will offer the latest innovations in digital reading and functionalities adapted to provide tailor-made reading for different target audiences:
• animated illustrated ebooks, with different reading levels
• audio books for visually impaired audiences and for anyone wishing to enter the music of the language
• Sign language books to make literature accessible to deaf migrants. Indeed, access to writing is particularly difficult for the deaf people as we learn to read by hearing. Some of deaf migrants do not know any sign language that means any language at all.

Besides, we aim to enable adult educators addressing migrants, low-skilled adults and learners with Specific Learning Disorders and disabilities to develop innovative pedagogical content dedicated to language learning for their learners and with their learners through digital tools and “turnkey” supports. This is why we want to involve them throughout the production chain of animated ebooks by creating a clear methodology and developing a publication tool that is as simple as possible.
Thus, to maximise the transferability of the project, we wish to make the trainers autonomous in the creation of this library and allow them in the long term to organize workshops about ebooks creations from European cultural resources databases with their learners.
The series of pedagogical dossiers and practical sheets that we plan to develop will aim to facilitate the implementation of the project in training programmes.

The enhancement of European heritage, the fight against illiteracy, the integration of newcomers and people in very precarious situations are issues that concern all European countries. Isolated national responses to these issues cannot be sufficient to address such challenges.

Through the collaboration of European public and private associations and institutions and the exchange of good practices between partners and associated partners, by highlighting the exceptional resources of European heritage, we wish to make culture and heritage more accessible to all European citizens, improve and support the professional practices of adult educators who transmit this culture and promote intercultural dialogue between learners and educators.

Through its transversal and multisectoral approach, this project thus makes it possible to address together key EU priorities such as the promotion of culture and heritage, the strengthening and expansion of trainers’ skills, the improvement of adult language learning and key competences such as writing and the development of digital skills among trainers.

This project is designed as a proposal for the form that a universal digital library could take, really accessible in these contents and in their forms to audiences who generally do not have access to the written word for multiple reasons (socio-economic, disability, disorders…). We hope that it will be a source of inspiration to develop similar initiatives.
