Project Summary
Young people with disabilities are often excluded from environmental concerns and sustainable development issues because of a lack of adapted support and a sometimes limited environment because of their disability.
However, they have the same needs as the common public regarding information and understanding of their environment, discovery of nature, origin of their food… in order to control better their consumption, to measure the impacts of their way of lives on the environment. They also have the same rights, the same duties and the same responsibilities in a perspective of sustainable development and European eco-citizenship.
The INSIDEE project (INclusion through SustaInable Development and European Eco-citizenship) aims to develop the knowledge of young people with disabilities (intellectual/mental disability) in terms of sustainable development and provide them with the necessary skills to become active and responsible European eco-citizen.
This project will contribute to the awareness of young people about the effects of human actions on the environment, the risks and consequences of a non-respectful behavior on natural resources.
Through non-formal education, the organization of training activities and creation of adapted tools, a group of 15 youth workers will develop skills and abilities in that field in order to support and encourage the young people of their organization to put into practice eco-actions that can have a positive impact and will lead to reflect on their power to change things as citizens at local and European level. The young will be able to be active role-models as Eco-Ambassadors in their social or professional environment.
The partnership brings together two very complementary types of partners in this project:
1- Those who work daily with young people with disabilities: Verdiblanca, Nyama Nevuzmozhni Neshta and ESAT du Rangen but who currently have no knowledge and practice in the field of the environment, sustainable development, eco-citizenship,
2– Those whose daily life is to accompany partners, youth organizations, schools, to practices of respect for the environment, sustainable food, of citizenship but who do not have the knowledge the approach of public with special educational needs and intellectual disabilities.
Thus, the partners leave their comfort zone, experiment, invent, adapt and enrich each other. The production of this common work, of an undisputed added value, will be shared and will therefore benefit the greatest number of organizations, whether they are those dedicated to the support of youth, intellectual disability or environmental education in general.
