Project Summary
The project “Feel Better, Learn Better, Live Better” deals with well-being at school and practices exchanges between teachers. It brought new knowledges, technics and tools for the teachers and enhanced collaboration and links between pupils.
It took place for 2 years with 5 partner countries (Belgium, Finland, France, Hungary and Spain) and included 3 transnational mobilities per year including for each from 2 to 6 teachers from each school. During each mobility, we followed a common structure of activities : workshop at school, classroom practice and a focus on one specific topic in each country. Workshops will consist into building methodology and tools to help pupils to be able to focus and develop self-awareness. Partners shares their knowledge and expertise. The teachers evaluated and discussed the experimentations and each kept the best practices for himself and introduces them in his classroom.
Here are the topics :
1) Self-awareness : first step of the project, using mindfulness, yoga, pupils have worked on their strength and their self-confidence. Many mindfullness technics have been tested and are now part of the curriculum in the schools.
2) Emotional intelligences : through artistic practices (theatre, painting, music….), several emotional measurements have been developped, so the pupils can choose the most significant for them. Taking into account pupils’ emotions help them to feel more secure in the school and increases empathy. The consequence is that they are able to work more efficiently with their pairs.
3) Communication strategies : developing clear classroom/playground rules and implementing “I-messages” protocol reduced conflicts and bullying. The presence of “playground buddies” minimized conflicts and misunderstanding and strenghtened the links between pupils, pupils and teachers. Children became more independant and responsible.
4) Cooperation : learning to work with each others on a same subject, helping a friend to understand a problem, sharing cooperation games led to a better cool climate. Pupils are less selfish, they have understood that mutual support facilitates learning.
5) Healthy body and mind : outdoor learning, active learning, sport, health education and connection to nature, provided positive effects on concentration and attention. The national Finnish programm “Finnish schools on the move” was a good inspiration for this topic.
The last transnational meeting opened a new reflexive field. Well-being at school is linked with the uses and design of the school spaces. We started to work on spaces – playground and corridors – using the “design thinking” method.
The project outcomes are on the Etwining space.
As a result, school climate has improved and become more peaceful as collaborative skills and empathy have been developed. Pupils learn to identify, to express and to regulate their emotions. They are more concentrated and less stressed.
Teachers gained innovative tools and methods, selected the more suitable for them and their classes and now, use them in the classroom. Teachers are engaged in a dynamic research. As pupils feel better at school, they are more involved in their activities and that reinforced the well-being at school. And teachers are more efficient and relaxed in front of more receptive pupils.
Our project positive results are related with its european perspective. During each meeting, we had a deep insight in the different educational systems and tried to get the best or the most innovative of them . Pupils and parents are now aware of this work and more open-minded on european subjects.
