Project Summary
Our project, “Diving into the sea with MeWeSpace”, arises from the needs of three European schools to develop core and transversal competencies with an innovative educational approach, reinforcing digital integration, collaborative work and building solidarity and respect for other cultures. To achieve this objective, the three schools, “Iraclie Porumbescu” in Romania, “Rantzausminde Skole” in Denmark, and “El Volerany” in Spain, have designed this project along three main goals:
1. Cooperation among the three participating schools in order to share experiences and thereby favour communication in English in a meaningful and functional way. The goal is to work in a network which boosts the motivation of both the students and teachers working in the project.
2. The sea as a backbone for cultural and scientific knowledge. We would like to strengthen the relationship between our students and the sea, since this relationship is in peril. This backbone will bring us closer to other realities, in a joint effort to maintain and disseminate maritime culture. We count on the collaboration of entities (Fishermen’s Guilds, gastronomic associations, marine observatories, universities, maritime museums, fishing ports, etc.) and institutions (ports, municipal councils, departments of education, educational services, etc.)
3. The MeWeSpace platform. The MeWeSpace platform proposes a new way of learning whereby the teachers and the students can do their presentations on three screens using sensory input, sound and lighting, literally plunging them into the space. This platform will permit us to create globalised and interdisciplinary presentations using the experience and knowledge derived from the competential activities about the sea in the three partner schools.
Our Erasmus+ project will allow us to be trained in the MeWeSpace platform in the Danish school, which has pioneered in the implementation of this digital and educational resource. Two teachers from the school in Romania and two from the school in Spain will train in Denmark. These teachers will then transfer their knowledge to their respective teams and students back home. This training might even be extended to other interested schools in the vicinity. To finish, there will be a second training session, halfway through the project, carried out by two MeWeSpace experts from Denmark, who will check, on location in Romania and Spain, the proper set up, use, and optimization of the digital platform and deal with any technical issues that may have occurred. This collaborative work process among the three schools will reach up to 1500 primary education students.
The following describes the methodology that will be employed:
– Each school will design a digital creation with all of the material gathered in the planned project activities: visits (Fishermen’s Guilds, fishing ports and auctions, marine observatories, maritime museums, centres for the recovery and reproduction of marine animals), workshops (knots, nets, sea jewellery, cooking), lectures (impact of fishing on the coastline, the art of fishing), artisanal fairs (products made by students in the workshops) and the implementation of the MeWeSpace.
– Tutorials will be created from the visits, workshops, and lectures to show and share with other schools.
– The material from the planned activities will be shared via the blog/e-Twinning.
– We will post an agreed-upon selection of all the materials on the blog/e-Twinning.
– This selected information will form part of the MeWeSpace presentation.
This way of working will permit students to carry out their education in a meaningful and interactive way, starting from their own reality, through direct contact with organizations, professionals, and the environment. Students will have to research, experiment, and perform competential learning in order to export, yield, and disseminate their findings. The English language will be their sole means of communication, thus giving functionality and meaning to its use. We want to help our students become more supportive, open-minded, and acquainted with the realities that surround them.
MeWeSpace will become an innovative tool which will form part of the good practices in the school. The digital material will be the final result of the project and it will be disseminated in the maritime museums of the different towns or regions of the partner schools. There, it will become part of a permanent exhibition which will be updated with further joint efforts through the association of the three participating schools in the project.
We aim to establish solid ties and lasting networks among students, teachers, families, the entire school community, town councils, and local or regional entities. We would like to fully immerse ourselves in our Project so that we may experience different countries, different seas, different cultures and a single world. A world where all girls and boys have the same opportunities.
