The regions in Austria, Italy and Spain have a common european history. All three regions had to suffer under the european dimension of Holocaust. In Italy there were thousands of persons deportated to Austria and other countries. In Spain thousands of people sufferd under faschistip terror system and got into excil, were deportated und murdered.
In the time of national socialism people from Empoli were deported and killed to the Concentration camp Gusen. Every year people from Empoli and the schools think about history intensivly. In the year 1997 a partnership between Empoli and St. Georgen was established. At the beginning of 2016 Mauthausen-Gusen-St. Georgen founded the “Region of consciousness Mauthausen-Gusen-St.Georgen”. These are all steps which show that the Commune of Empoli and the Commune of St.Georgen with their schools, organisations of adult education active think about history, new forms of remembrance work, best practise of projects and competences for history work. Contacts to Catalonia were set up through the region of awareness.
