Project Summary
Our project “A Bridge between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea” involves the Collège Ravel (Basque Coast) and the Instituto Honori Garcia (Valencia province).
The educational objectives, beyond linguistic exchange, are the artistic and cultural educational studies (PEAC) and sustainable development education.
The students concerned are between 13 and 15 years old. This project involves 27 students from Ravel College and 15 students from IES Honori Garcia.
The meeting between students from these two regions, whose common point is the coastline, will enable collaborative work and sharing around the worldwide issue of both global warming and cultural heritage. The multidisciplinary teams of both schools will carry out the following activities: Exploration of the fauna and flora on both coasts, the visit of a museum, and also an introduction to Basque pelota ball. We will develop collaborative working through the eTwinning platform in order to approach the theoretical points to prepare for on-site stays.
Through this experience, we wish to boost our students’ motivation in terms of school results, opportunities for further studies, and possibly encourage a more thorough scientific culture and appetite to learn.
The first step will consist in an activity around the study of the Mediterranean coast and the impact of climate change. We will compare the current reliefs with the past ones with the help of a map, topography and the different measures adopted to preserve the cities from meteorological hazards. We will also compare the measures deployed in the Mediterranean sea to tackle the rise of the seafront, with those developed in the Atlantic Ocean.
A further activity around heritage will be an opportunity to discover futuristic architecture and historical traditions.
Step 2 will focus on the study of the Atlantic coast, through a comparison with the studies carried out during step 1. We will carefully examine the classified, natural sites and monuments and analyse the different measures taken to preserve the environment. The cultural, artistic and sports heritage will guide us to the discovery of monuments, museums and folklore.
A connection will thus be made between the specific features of a region and their impact on the job market.
Step 3 will be based on the environment through the study of marine biodiversity, thanks to the exploration of a protected site, in order to understand the dynamics of marine pollution, study the impact of climate change and marine pollution, and look into the studies on endemic seaweeds, proof of water quality. The connection with the economic environment will be established through the visits of fishing industries. The aspects of cultural heritage will be developed with the discovery of our Spanish partner’s culture and theatrical culture.
Step 4 will focus on the culture and local heritage of the Basque Country through sailors life, with an introduction to local songs, tales and dances, the visits of the houses of Luziens ship-owners, and a study of marine painting . The successive steps will then materialize in an exhibition during the closing ceremony, and will be shared on the Erasmus website of the Ravel school complex.
