Project Summary
Our project involves a partnership between Victor Hugo High School in Château Gontier and Colaiste Bhride High School in Carnew, Ireland.
It includes an exchange (therefore with reciprocity) during which activities will be organized and it also includes distance work in between exchange times in the host countries.
Our final objective is to ensure that the students themselves organize the mathematics week that will take place during the Irish students’ stay in France. They will therefore have to build puzzles, games or escape games for students who did not participate in the project. We would like to organize a festive and bilingual event around mathematics.
This project concerns year 11 students enrolled in the European section (DNL mathematics) for France and, on the Irish side, students of the same age who are learning French, i. e. a little less than 50 students altogether. On the other hand, the benefits will be for all the students of the French high school since they will have to find the solutions to the games built during the year.
Several phases have been planned and scheduled. The first one is a distance contact phase, during which the students will have to choose a topic and learn mathematical vocabulary. Then, the first gathering will take place in Ireland. Various activities will be organized: visit of the school, classes with the correspondents and group work (supervised by an Irish teacher and a French teacher) to design games and puzzles. A visit to the Science Museum in Dublin is also on planned. After this trip, work will continue at distance. The aim will be to finalise the problems started in Ireland via the etwinning platform. Finally, the second gathering will take place in France. The programme will be similar to what will have been done in Ireland: a visit of the school, classes with correspondents and supervised group work. The work will have to be completed in order to be able to propose activities to the students of the school who did not participate in the exchange. A visit to the Cité des Sciences in Paris is also planned.
We expect a variety of impacts. First of all, on both sides, progress in French and in English is expected. In addition, it is certain that students will have a better knowledge of the other country, its culture and its educational system. Progress in mathematics is also expected as students will have invented enigmas themselves. Among the benefits, we must not forget the school students who did not take part in this project. Since they will be participating in the games, we hope they will have a more positive, enjoyable and practical vision of mathematics, while mixing French and English.
We also plan to publish our final production on etwinning to incite other teachers and students to create similar projects.
