Project Summary
A project ‘A Window on Europe’ will be carried out by two primary schools: a small Polish school situated in a beautiful place on the Trail of the Eagle’s Nest (Polish: Szlak Orlich Gniazd), in the Ogrodzieniec Commune, in Giebło and a Slovak school, 200 km from Giebło in Spisskie Podhradie. Supporting and reinforcing the development of key competences and basic skills, developing of English language skills and promoting awareness are main aims of the project. Students of 6th to 8th class (30 people, 13-15 years old) take part in the project, including 10 students and 3 teachers who go abroad. From the Slovak school, 30 students, 13-15 years old and 10 students with 3 teachers visit Poland.
Students come from a rural society, they live in families with an average and low income. Part of them are aware that only receiving a good education in compliance with requirements of the modern world can provide a better living and it may change their social status, it is their window on the world. Many of our students, because of lack of good examples at home, very often do not realize how education is important for their future life. Not only students and teachers will participate in the project, but also parents, local community and authorities.
Before the project starts, we analyse all needs and plan actions together. One of the first actions that we take are information activities about the project in the school and among a local community in two countries. Next, we want to start preparations for our trips. We decided that 5 students and 3 teachers from each school go abroad. During preparations for trips to the country of the partner, each school needs to have English classes and other classes which help participants of the international exchange to know the country and region to which they go. The next stage of the programme is the international exchange of students from the other school – the trip of students from Poland to Slovakia and the arrival of students from Spisskie Podhradie to Poland. A Slovak group will be accommodated in houses of Polish families and the Polish students and teachers in Slovak families. We prefer families with children at the similar age to our guests, especially the families of participants of our project from both countries.
In September 2021, the Slovaks come to Poland and in May 2021, the Polish group go to Slovakia. In the primary school in Giebło, many interesting classes are prepared for Slovak and Polish young people. Students take part in English, IT, science, biology and history classes conducted in an active way. We have planned interesting activities at school, outdoor activities and some trips. All activities at school include cooperation of Polish and Slovak students and teachers. They will be working on tourists attraction and environmental protection. Similar programme is prepared by the Slovaks for Polish students at their school. Both schools are well prepared for this type of activities. They have modern teaching aids and highly qualified teachers. It guarantees good quality of classes and achieving expected results.
After the student’s mobilities, we will be promoting effects of the project at school and among local community. To sum up effects of the project, we organise conferences with students, teachers, local authorities and local community. There will be a multimedia presentation that includes information presented about the student’s international exchange and results of the programme. Students tell about their experience and feelings and they answer questions. When the project finishes, we will be promoting results. We plan to create subsites about the programme on both school’s websites, on Facebook and on both commune’s websites. There will be some articles in local and regional newspapers.
On each level of the project we plan evaluation activities, at the beginning, before the project starts, they show a current situation, during the project, they monitor all activities so a team responsible for conducting the project can monitor incorrectness and to check and evaluate if planned goals are achieved. A final report evaluates adventages and disadventages of the project and it will be an example for us in the future because our aim is to strengthen relations and continue our cooperation.
The results of the project will be:
– students increase their language skills and key competences, they strengthen their motivation to learn foreign languages, they understand why it is important to learn foreign languages, students become more self-confident Europeans
– teachers enrich teaching practice, they get to know innovative methods, tools and teaching aids, they strengthen their motivation to teach and they have a job satisfaction
– schools increase prestige in local community and international potential
– we create an innovative teaching programme
