Project Summary
According to the European Commission´s 2018 Report on “Equality between women and men in the EU”, although more than 9 in 10 Europeans think that promoting gender equality and nonviolence is important to ensure a fair and democratic society, its promotion, protection and implementation still requires a constant change of mind-sets, lifelong education and solidarity.
Given the unstable social, political and economic situation in Portugal, other partner countries and Europe, we decided to form a Strategic Partnership, in this “Adults Education against Abuses of Power” project, as we believe that it is of utmost importance to address abuse and gender inequalities.
The Partnership is formed by:
-AMC, Portugal, NGO aiming at non-discrimination in the labour market
-ORIEL, Italy, aims to promote the active participation and social inclusion
-OSO, Polish Association offering non-formal education for those with fewer opportunities
-CARDET, Cyprus, a Centre for advancement of research and development in educational technology
-P.CANTABRIA, Spain, NGO working on social welfare.
Project objectives:
-Exchanging best practices to tackle the abuse and violence towards women.
-Gaining innovative tools to tackle the abuse and violence towards women.
-Raising awareness about gender abuse.
-Reinforcing partnership with organizations working to eradicate gender abuse, at local, national and EU levels.
The project also goes in line with the “Gender Equality Strategy” (2020-2025) proposed by the European Commission.
The learning activities planned to achieve the goals are:
-3 study visits (in Italy, Portugal and Cyprus), attended by 2 participants from each entity (The Project and Dissemination Coordinators).
-A course in Spain, attended by the Project and Dissemination Coordinators, 1 adult trainer from each entity and 2 adult participants (5 per entity).
These activities will allow us to better understand the reality of the adult gender abuse victims, which will further allow us to raise awareness of this problem.
By visiting participating organisations´ local communities and other institutions with whom they cooperate, we will be able to directly, get to know their best practices and specific tools, to fight for a more just, discrimination and violence-free society (including new ways of violence like cyber-abuse).
Round tables will let us benchmark our methods of working with adult learners against newly-experienced ideas and initiatives.
Gender is not the only factor in women’s lives, as there are many more aggravating issues that undermine their wellbeing and social inclusion. That is why education to explore these issues, such as ethnicity, sexual orientation or disabilities are also needed.
Also, gender violence victims are economically dependent on their offenders, adding on shame, guilt and emotional dependence, to the problem.
Thus, the course in Spain will focus on learning measures to address adult nonviolence, through emotional management tools. We will also visit institutions that work with women with disabilities or from cultural minorities, getting to know their best practices and deepen our expertise on working with collectives with fewer opportunities.
The newly-gained skills and insights will be further passed on, to other adults and adults trainers, during internal workshops organised by the course attendees and subsequently used in defining and implementing future EU projects.
A constant communication and a participative and flexible methodology (planned in different phases) will allow to permanently monitor that activities and tasks are completed, on time, and the project objectives achieved.
Project Impact:
Adult trainers directly participating in the project, will broaden their capacities and gain new abilities, for their daily work, creating a direct effect on the gender-abuse vulnerable collectives they work with, advancing the benefits of their educational activities.
Adult learners who participate in the course in Spain will acquire relevant best practices to face and counteract abuse and discrimination, in different contexts, becoming more active and empowered Europeans.
The multicultural environment will raise both groups’ consciousness level and improve their linguistic, task-management and communication skills.
Entities involved will deepen their expertise on gender discrimination and violence, improving the scope of their activities and their staff’s qualifications. They will broaden their international networks for future initiatives and help to make Erasmus+ program more known.
More gender-related violence and discrimination victims will be reached and empowered, directly and indirectly, through a wide dissemination campaign and adult trainers’ work.
Finally, Europeans, in general, will be better informed and equipped, to provoke a social shift, so that women are no longer underprivileged and gender-based violence and harassment is less widespread across society.
