Project Summary
Nowadays, in the European Union, a great majority of graduates are…..women!
However, only one in three researchers is a woman, and 79.6 % of European women are active in the labour market compared with 91.4 % for European men. (From the OCDE, 2017 and Eurostat,2016). Far from being acknowledged, gender equality in the field of employment has logically become one of the key commitments of the European Union. Such a priority is being worked on in our schools, responsible for professional education and course choices. Education professionals have been working for years to struggle against these inequalities.
This project involves 5 countries : Spain, France, Italy, Lithuania and Portugal. All the schools taking part in the “Alter-Equals : all jobs are mixed” project are located in rural areas. They now wish to work on their students’ awareness to the outside world in order to guarantee them a selected course choice. The shattering of stereotypes is crucial to be able to tackle such a deep, intimate and committing choice as one’s studies and professional future.
The point is to find levers to cut down those stereotypes for real and think beyond traditional speeches.
The project carried out along the following methodology :
– Identification, understanding and comparison of the different stereotypes in all European countries involved.
– Deconstruction work through various educational activities such as : group work, role-playing, outside contributors, forum theatre, the making of media tools (radio, videos….) , the writing of fictional texts and so on…
– Workshops to promote equality in a concrete way by mixing girls and boys but also different countries. They are highlights for all partners. These activities are shared between teachers on a database.
– Analysis of potentially discriminating teaching practices in educational systems : this is a crucial aspect to study in order to act deeply. How do teachers work in this area?
This work resulted in the realization of a final production : a website with an interactive quiz questioning stereotypes. The answers submitted lead to various resources from each country in order to invalidate bias. This intellectual approach will allow students to identify the very motives of bias and think deeply to finally come up with relevant answers.
This projecthad an impact on hundreds of European students from secondary schools. Consequently, they opened themselves to others, aware of stereotypes, and, by thinking beyond those stereotypes, build a more egalitarian world vision. Furthermore, these students will prepare their future career in keeping with their inner expectations, and therefore become European citizens happier in their work.
