Project Summary

Early school leavers (ESL) and persons having dropped-out of school are among the main target groups facing the risk of marginalization, mainly by having fewer opportunities of entering the labour market not only because of their low level of typical skills, but also for psychosocial reasons related to having dropped out of school. On the other hand, digital technologies are key drivers of innovation, growth and job creation. Even though ICT and social media are utilized also by low-skilled and low-qualified adults, they tend to demonstrate a lower level of understanding of the broader implications that their online activity has on their professional life. It should be also mentioned that vocational training programmes for unemployed adults tend to focus on developing certain “basic” ICT skills, which usually include the use of a personal computer and how to use the most commonly used software packages, without focusing on more “advanced” skills, like the use of social media.
In this regard, the overall objective of this project is to maximise the impact and contribution of alternative education or other equivalent institutions for adult education both in terms of increasing the quality of courses provided and also in facilitating the access of their attendants to the labour market through developing media literacy competences and digital skills for job search purposes.
Specific project objectives include:
• To enhance media literacy competences and digital skills of adults having dropped out of the education system and attending alternative educational institutions through innovative learning tools;
• To encourage educators in alternative education or other equivalent institutions for adults to extend their media literacy and digital skills by understanding their significance and contribution to the advancement of the learners, both from an educational and a professional scope of view;
• To attract adults having dropped out of school to complete their secondary education by attending alternative educational institutions for adults through effective outreach strategy.
The main target group of the project is educators in alternative educational institutions for adults who haven’t completed secondary education. Adults with low typical skills who haven’t completed the secondary education will be the final project beneficiaries and will be actively involved in the main project activities. The project will also target institutions and stakeholders active in adult education.
The main activities of the project include: a) the development of a capacity building methodology for educators of alternative education institutions for adults based on the existing web-based professional profiling methodologies & practices, as well as on the special needs of low-skilled middle-aged adults who haven’t completed the secondary education; b) the development and pilot testing of an online capacity building platform; and c) the promotion of this methodology and tool together with a comprehensive manual and accompanied by proposals for updating the existing curricula for adult education.
The expected impact of the project on educators in alternative institutions for low-skilled adults involves upgrading their skills in one of the main modern challenges of low-skilled adults, using social and digital media for job search purposes. The project will not only build their necessary skills through the online platform, but also allow them to enrich their background about the actual needs for support from the low skilled adults’ side.
The project will also have a very positive impact for its final beneficiaries, low skilled adults who haven’t completed secondary education. Their digital skills will be enhanced in terms of using social media for job search purposes, therefore their access to the labour market will be facilitated. It is expected that through this project, low skilled adults will be in a position to identify and pursue more job opportunities, maximizing thus their chances of finding a job.
It should also be mentioned that the project will have a significant positive impact also to the alternative educational for adults, since it will allow them to elevate the standards and quality of services offered by updating their curricula, based on project elements. This will enhance their role and mandate in adult education and maximise their value in the eyes of low skilled adults. The project will contribute to the Erasmus+ Programme objectives, as well as to the implementation of the priorities of the New Skills Agenda for Europe, by improving the quality of skills and their relevance for the labour market.
It should also be noted that the impact of the project will follow high sustainability standards, since the online platform (which is the main tool developed by the project) will remain functional and accessible after the end of the project, together with the proposals for updating the curricula and the manual for the educator
