Project Summary

Complex Youth Theatre and Junk Shop Theatre engaged in a Transnational Initiative, through the devising and production of two plays on the theme of the legacy of post war attitudes on young people. These plays were created by young people between the ages of 14 and 19, who researched, improvised using theatre techniques and then scripted two plays, ‘Her Eyes They Shone Like Diamonds’ and ‘Under The Flag’ that were performed at local community level, in Nottingham as a full performance and in Dublin as a rehearsed reading. Some of these young people are from circumstances that offer them fewer opportunities than their peers, from both youth theatres. 50 young people were involved. The plays were then exchanged and performed by the other youth theatre to an invited audience of general public, peers, friends and family. Both performances were video recorded and exchanged. Each group watched the other’s show at a specially organised screening and immediately afterwards there was be a live debate followed by an evaluation process, conducted via Skype video conference. The plays have been be e-published and made available to other youth theatres in Ireland and the UK for performance and sent on to stakeholders for consideration as testament to the young people’s views and current attitudes. The video recordings have been uploaded to YouTube where they are available for view by the general public as well as participants, stakeholders, interested parties and other youth theatres.
