Project Summary

The title of our project is: “Be the change … you want to be!” and we aim to gain insights, experiences and good practices in order to design the process that a school can take towards its transformation into Sustainable. We also aim to set qualitative criteria which will be the “markers” for the participants initially but also for other schools in this process.
The environmental problem and sustainable development in education is no longer dealt with by its purely technical or epistemological aspect, but is also seen as a social problem of conflict of interest and, ultimately, a problem of human behavior. As a consequence of this, enlargement of the cognitive subject of education for sustainability, beyond the scope of study and solving environmental problems, in social and economic fields such as human rights and democracy, gender equality, multiculturalism, social tolerance, ensuring health and quality of life, tackling poverty, collective responsibility, and the market economy.
Given that values and lifestyles develop at a young age, education is an indispensable tool for raising the level of society, achieving informed decision-making, good governance, and promoting democracy. Therefore, the educational process to achieve its goal has to give individuals the ability to change mindsets, develop critical thinking, judge and make decisions towards sustainable development.
“The highest trait of a people’s culture is their degree of understanding and participation in political life. And the ideal expression of culture is that all citizens have a thorough understanding and conscious involvement in the formation of team life. Ideal that we are very far off, amazingly, still. Ideally expressed by the sacred word Democracy, so humourous, so masked and so unappealing even on earth “, Dimitrios Glinos, Greek Educator.
Our work is geared towards adopting an educational example, and supports the development of systemic and critical thinking, the holistic-interdisciplinary approach / view of issues and the development of action in favor of the environment and man. It marks a new vision and a different educational approach that will allow our students to better understand the world they live in, to understand the interconnection of problems (eg over consumption, depletion of natural resources, decline in cities, inequality gender and race, violation of human rights, environmental degradation, etc.) and ultimately to be able to cope with the complexity of reality.
All this will be achieved through various activities that will take place during the two years of our project implementation.
