Project Summary
In reaction to dynamic development in modern biology and biomedicine, we aim to establish an “Inter-university Bioinformatics Centre HK/ Meziuniverzitní bioinformatické centrum HK” to support researchers and students at universities in HK and to mediate contact with state-of-the-art real-life science to high school teachers and students in the region of HK.
Our two partner companies from abroad will be organizing courses in bioinformatics, biostatistics and programming for biology and biomedicine for our researchers and students and will be providing us with tutorials for each course.
The UHK will be organizing crash courses in Czech prior to the courses in English and will be preparing tutorial in Czech to increase effectivity of these courses. Researchers and students specialized in narrowly focused fields will be having the occassion to participate on a broad scale of courses provided by our partner companies abroad. These specialists will then provide a concise summary of each course in Czech for our researchers and students.
This primary increase in competences of researchers at the universities in HK by their participation in bioinformatics courses will then reflect in two levels of its secondary impacts: (1) we will be continuing in and strengthening our contact with high schools in the Hradec Kralove Region by providing courses for high school teachers of biology and programming in the framework of their ´further pedagogic training and education´. This activity has been already organized by the Faculty of Science of the UHK on other topics. Including bioinformatics is going to provide a link between biology and programming and to show the benefits of interdisciplinarity and mutual cooperation between these two fields. Further, the cross-sectoral focus of our project will be accomplish by arranging courses for high school students. These activities will be built on already initiated collaboration with our associated partner, the Bischop High School in HK, where scientists of the UHK organize talks and seminars on topics of modern biology to establish a direct contact with students and to enable their insights into career in science.
(2) our incresed competences in bioinformatics will facilitate already initiated scientific collaboration between the UHK and the University of Innsbruck (UIBK) in developing methods how to utilize the still growing amount of genomics data (sequenced genomes) in research and in research training of students. There will be followig outputs of this collaboration: 1 methodology publication, 2 scientific publication published in a journal with impact factor and we aim to establish a Summer school of rRNA secondary structure in systematics, phylogenetics and genomics as a community activity of research and research training for students and young scientists utilizing and further processing the genomics data.
The UHK and UK will prepare tutorials and the Handbook of bioinformatics in Czech covering the field of bioinformatics according to needs of researchers and students in HK.
