Project Summary

Our project is being initiated in the wake of student demonstrations for climate action in Belgium in 2019 and of citizen engagement in Sweden. In Belgium, our students demonstrated and set up a reflection committee in order to carry out projects within the school. In Sweden, sustainable development has been a major issue for many years, particularly in Kalmar, in the Baltic Sea basin.
Our goal is to respond to the concerns of our students and their willingness to commit to sustainable development in their daily lives and for their future by questioning their European identity and by carrying this reflection project around sustainable development in its social, ecological and economic dimensions in their institution and region.
The students involved will be aged between 16 and 18 years at the time of the project and enrolled in upper secondary education. A total of 50 students should take part in this project (about 25 students for each partner school), with an impact for the two schools of 400 students.
Practically, the objective will be to conduct a reflection through the exchange of best practices in each school. The project will mainly consist in meeting local actors of sustainable development in Sweden and Belgium, and in creating student exchange workshops through the Etwinnings platform and group workshops in the two respective countries. These workshops and exchanges will aim at getting students to compare their practices and those of the societies they live in. To that end, the main pedagogical theme will be structured around the production of a film, “What if we imagine tomorrow?”, which will feature two families (one from Belgium and another one from Sweden) and their experiences around sustainable development. This final project will be built on and implemented throughout the exchange via the courses of French, Social Sciences, English and Sciences (Biology).
Ultimately, the project will enable students to develop their knowledge of their surrounding environments from a social, economic and ecological point of view. This learning, which is part of a citizen and European approach, will lead them to develop in the future a sense of citizenship for themselves, but also for the school they attend. The film that will be produced will be available for screening to the entire school community and possibly, at the local level.
