Project Summary

This project helped raise awareness about climate issues, nature
protection and how to teach such significant and complicate themes to
preschool children. Also, to exchange the good practice ideas about
environmental education and sustainable development at preschools.
The project title is “Inside and out of the Beehive. What goes inside
the Beehive and outside is one of the most amazing stories in nature”.
Beehive is also a comprehensive symbol for the preschool. The bees are
pictured as children who are navigating in and outside of the building
(beehive).
During this project, teachers got more ideas about involving children
and their parents in different activities.
The main project goal was to raise the staff’s professional
advancement—improvement of the knowledge about sustainable development
and environmental education.
These priorities were linked to the preschool’s curriculum and used
in the everyday learning process.
We gave children the opportunity to share their insights. All partners
together had the same theme, e.g. growing plants, preparing vegan
food.
Turing the project, there were the following actions for the children:
the honey-making process were introduced; children visited local
farmers and visited the Natural History Museum, where researchers
explore nature, including bees.
– plant life circle, from seed to plant, fingers in the soil. Composting
– recycling old material, making new toys and presents. Some partners
visited a waste management station and exhibitions about recycling
material.
– water theme. Different type of experiments with water. Each partner
approached it from a different angle.
– climate issues. Akranes kindergarten made photos every week and
after compiled presentation how the weather has changed.
– kindergartens participated all together in warm jumper day; lowering
the heat in the rooms.
– teachers used digital learning tools; all partners merged film clips
into one long movie.

All participants disseminated project results in their preschools and
neighbourhood kindergartens.
