Project Summary
Nothing is going on in Kyritz, a small town in the state of Brandenburg? But – here you canoe.
Our high school has had canoes for two years and the pupils use it as part of a weekly working group and project days and weeks. As the only school in town, we regularly use the possibilities of water sports and are happy to be able to offer children and young people this alternative and meaningful recreation opportunity. Now we would like to start a student exchange with our partner city Wałcz in Poland. There is an Olympic base for water sports and a wonderful chain of lakes. Together with the 5th primary school in Wałcz, we plan mutual visits of one week each within one school year. On site, canoeing and workshops, such as natural cosmetics DIY, survival skills and wild herb hikes convey the idea of sustainability and knowledge about water protection and climate change. This experiential pedagogical approach has a strong stmulative character and also strengthens social skills such as teamwork and self-esteem.
The 10 students of each country of the 6th-9th classes practice speaking English, exchanging views and explaining each other their world. Historical talks, city excursions and creative workshops, e.g. land-art and folklore dances complete the trips. Between visits, students use eTwinning to work on an e-book about their region of origin, environmental and nature conservation issues and actively plan their exchange trips. These are to be documented photographically and culminate in an exhibition that will be shown in both cities. We want to bring the neighbouring countries closer together and bring our schools closer to Europe. Therefore, the exchange should be established in the long term and repeated annually if possible.
