Project Summary
Migration is a major political topic in the European Union. There is a discussion about migration policies. Spain, Hungary and Germany have different opinions about how to handle immigration to their countries. Many questions have not been solved yet e.g. immigrants keep on dying in the Mediterranean Sea, the Dublin Regulation fails.
Also to our students, migration is an important topic. Not only one with which they are confronted in the media, their every day life is also affected. The students are surrounded by a constantly changing society. They live in a multicultural and multi faith society in Europe. Some have family members who have emigrated or immigrated, there are refugees at their school, foreign students are in their class. Time to look at the different aspects of migration in the three countries in order to create a spirit of openness and a European identity.
Need:
Since 2016 an intensive German class exists at the Alfred-Wegener-Schule. Immigrants receive up to two years intensive German lessons until they start to go into the regular classes. It shows that at our school, the immigrants are not well integrated into the school community.
Aims:
1) To increase knowledge about migration in the EU.
2) The students should discover that in history countries can change from societies of emigrants to societies of immigrants.
3) Broaden awareness and compassion of migration by getting to know immigrants.
Projects:
1) Working together with institutions such as the Philipps-Universität Marburg to gain important information about migration in the EU.
2) We visit museums in the three countries in order to understand the history of migration.
3) The students interview immigrants in the three nations and ask them about their reasons to leave their home country and try to find out which problems they had/have to confront.
4) The students come up with ideas on how to improve the relations o the German students to their intensive German class. (cooking, music, doing sports together, to introduce a buddy-system)
Evaluation:
1) The students write summaries on the information collected in the institutions and will create material for the Social Science classes at their schools.
2) The students document the visits to the museums e.g with videos.
3) The students record interviews and put them afterwards together in a podcast that they publish in the open radio station in Marburg (Radio Unerhört).
