Project Summary

Technology has changed the possibilities within teaching and learning. The high consideration of EC about it led to the establishment of Digital Education Plan COM(2018) 22 and set the topic among the most relevant skills to be developed to ensure a competitive EU in the future (A New Skills Agenda for Europe, Key Competences for Lifelong Learning.)
Schools are the main environment where develop digital skills in order to avoid future gaps and lacks hindering European employment, citizens literacy and social cohesion. The outcomes so far are not encouraging. The “2nd Survey of Schools: ICT in Education” (March 2019) by EC stressed that 76% of upper secondary school students never or almost never engage in coding or programming at school and the female percentage rise up to over 80%. The majority of secondary school students are not able to assess the reliability of what they read online, to locate information and navigate autonomously (OECD, 2016). Teachers face the same challenge as “Digital Competence of Educators” stresses and teachers training in ICT is rarely compulsory. A lack of European educational coordination concerning digital education came up: no common curricula, competences area, assessment frameworks Eurydice 2019).
Along with this, the problem of online disinformation has been directly undertaken by EC over the last 3 years (HLEG on fake news and Flash Eurobarometer 464).
The “Check & Design” project will be targeting both upper secondary students and teachers in order to respond adequately to two competence areas delivered by DigComp 2.1.: (i) Information and data literacy; (iii) Digital content creation.
The project supports teachers all over EU in gaining innovative digital methods and pedagogies to spot online fake news, developing digital learning materials and tools, supporting the effective use of the online sources and transfer the methodology to their students in order to:
– Enhance the digital exploitation in education and boosting its role in tackling disinformation;
– Develop critical skills in students and make them able to become active citizens;
– Introduce digital educational technology at school in order to establish a collaborative learning process overcoming the schemes deployed by classical education;
– Students awareness on cultural activities deployed at local level.
To gain the necessary competence the staff of the following organizations has been officially involved:
– CREMIT: Department of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) specialised in digital education and Media and data literacy.
– Archilabò: social cooperative integrating learning techniques with new ICT tools
– 5 European upper secondary schools settled in 5 Eurocities taking care of “Cultural access and young people”.
A training will be set up in order to let school teachers gain the necessary skills and tools to spot fake news online and create digital contents. The teachers will be transferring the competences to their students who will be testing and assessing the methodology delivered. The pilots will lead to the creation of national digital reports concerning the efforts and outcomes achieved by the Eurocities represented by the partnership. A virtual exchange for students will be implemented in order to let students involved in the creation of the digital textbooks comprehend the common efforts brought forth by Eurocities and EU in general as well as on the opposite side the differences between the cultural heritage sites and cultural management that enrich the European way to be united in diversity;
Plus an online local contest among students will be set up to let students analyse the different digital textbooks and rate several assessment headings related to the quality of cultural heritage.
The following Outputs will be realised:
i. Information literacy MOOC for school teachers and students: an OER tailor-made to enhance students’ capacity to spot fake news, to trace back to the source of information, to understand the info spreading processes. Available both blended and as digital tool only.
ii. Digital collaborative learning Toolkit for Teachers: methodological, pedagogical and assessment framework to foster the use of ICT tools for collaborative learning at school Digital Textbooks created over the local pilots and virtual activities will be showcased too.
iii. European Digital Teachers Curriculum: Recommendations for an innovative digital curriculum for secondary school teachers.
They will be obtained applying a methodology based on distribution of tasks, attribution of responsibilities, and coordination of decisions among all partners.
The impacts envisaged concern:
– The updating of teachers digital competences
– The adoption of collaborative and digital practices at school
– Digital engagement in contemporary issues at school and use of mobiles will be preventing ESL (Europe 2020)
The products will be freely available in 5 languages after the end of the project.
