Project Summary
In a world where climate change is among the most important global challenges, Clim’Act promoted a capacity building experience tailored for youth and youth workers in climate justice campaigning developed by partners’ grassroots organisations engaged in climate justice in different areas of the world. The project was a unique opportunity for youth from different social, economic and cultural backgrounds, to meet, exchange, collaborate and team build.
Through a training summer camp and youth engagement in campaigning and capacity building, the project’s action reinforced youth work in climate change active citizenship; built capacity of 656 youths and 27 youth workers; reinforced youth capacity to follow and analyse international climate policy processes and increased 437 youngsters with fewer opportunities’ social inclusion.
A1. Capacity building workshop “Climate justice summer camp”
An engaging 6 days’ summer camp hosted by A Sud was realised in Rome in the regional natural reserve “Parco dell’Aniene” to train youth workers and youth participants and design a shared campaign for climate justice. The camp and its step down training in Nigeria reinforced cooperation among partners and built synergies among participants, enhanced group spirit and youth work capacities in each national groups and most of all it developed key competences and the skills of 24 youths and 14 youth workers from Nigeria, Bulgaria, Ecuador and Italy providing youth with better capacity to participate in democratic life and climate issues. The workshops have been developed in a natural setting and in a camp modality aiming at enhancing sustainable behaviours and consumption. An educational platform (OER) containing workshop presentations, videos of training session and didactic file cards was created on the basis of the workshop contents and is now available in Spanish, Italian, English and Bulgaria. It was disseminated towards 20.000 contacts of entities engaged in climate change so to multiply the project effects on youth active citizenship and their competences in the field of climate change.
A2. Climate justice campaign
During the Clim’Act summer camp workshop the campaign “Climate Changing me” was created. In the process of identifying common grounds between Italian, Ecuadorian, Nigerian and Bulgarian contexts, the participants have decided to centre the campaign around people perception of climate change impacts, how climate change is changing their lives. Campaign’s core actions were directed at the diffusion of information regarding climate change impacts, further youth capacity building and the gathering of direct testimonies to be disseminated online in particular through the campaign facebook page that was able to create a community of about 2500 followers (78% under 35 years old) from 58 countries.
Moreover, their active participations in the development and diffusion of campaign tools in particular in the social media, youth participants gathered and disseminated over 110 testimonies from 19 countries in 4 continents, 54,5% from individuals under 30. Over 3000 people have participated to public events where the campaign was presented. The project activities were an opportunity for many youths with fewer opportunities to increase their social inclusion, being part of a joint international action bringing together youths and professionals from different cultural, economic and social backgrounds.
Both the workshop’s contents and the campaign’s activities have offered participating youth the opportunity to analyse and follow climate policies but also to disseminate pertinent information and tools and raise awareness towards more youths, in particular through social media and face to face sensitization.
