Project Summary

“Climate Change – Be Gre(a)t(a) – GLINTS (Germany Latvia Italy NeTherlands Spain) for Future” is an international project of those who want to follow Greta Thunberg’s model facing the environmental issues for a better future. Nowadays we are facing rising sea levels, air pollution, extreme weather conditions and marine pollution. The consequences can be seen in the occurrence of heavy droughts, extreme water shortages, forest fires and forest decline (extinction), harvest losses and floods.

Through their research about the most important information from various sources the students and teachers will enhance their environmental awareness. They will learn how to assess themselves regarding their ecological footprints and how to minimize it. The awareness of the educational institutions will also be increased. Furthermore, the students will develop their language skills, intercultural competence and their key competences through interacting with peers from other countries and working with them in teams on environmentally important issues.

The participating countries are Germany, Latvia, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. Each participating school has an individual environmental issue to tackle. For example, the participant from Jesi, Italy has already a cooperation with the UNIVPM (Ancona University, Faculty of Life Sciences) regarding marine pollution with microplastics which will be included in their project week. The groups for each country are made up of 20 students at the age of 14-16 years. For each activity every country will bring 5 students with them. They are supported by two project leaders. The first pupil’s activity will be in Meiningen, Germany and will be focused on an overall introduction into the field of climate change and on the specific threat of air pollution. In order to introduce the participants into the fields of climate change they had to calculate their own ecological footprint beforehands. The second activity in Jesi, Italy will comprise the fields of carbon footprints and waste management. The next week will be in Malaga, Spain and will face the topic of recycling, reusing and reducing of material in order to protect the environment. The second last activity will take place in Riga, Latvia and will deepen the issue of waste sorting especially regarding electronic devices and their reuse or disposal. The last week of the project will focus on solar energy and the impact of fossil fuels on our environment. The ecological footprint is also recalculated to determine the positive impact of this project on environmental awareness.

There will be five student exchanges, along with five teacher trainings in each participating country. During the exchanges the students will work on the tasks independently in smaller groups and record them in different ways. They will work on the respective topics from different perspectives to find practical solutions for themselves, their school and their region. They will be engaged in different types of activities, too in order to create as many access points as possible for the students.

Teachers will receive expert led training on the following topics:Besides developing language skills and intercultural competence, we want to raise environmental awareness and find practical solutions for individuals, their families, schools and regions in order to achieve the maximum impact of the project. Teachers should also acquire knowledge about climate change in order to integrate it into the curriculum and thus carry forward the essence of the project for all students in the future. These results will have a positive sustainable impact on the environment.
