Project Summary

1- Description of the educational project

Context: Programming has become essential in our society but is still very little known to the general public. Science and technology teachers who have the mission to introduce students to this logic of programming and coding regularly carry out research to give the taste of programming to students.
Secondary school students learn to program various objects or systems along their scientific and technological learning path. They use various languages and software to perform their tasks.

During her research two years ago, Mrs. Rabin discovered a start-up company called ROBOTICAL, which had made a donation appeal to create an educational robot that can be used from 8 years old and up to at least 18 years old. This robot named Marty may be programmed with very simple software for the youngest but also with Python programing language for the more experienced ; the language used for coding being most of the time English.
During the follow-up of this project, Mrs. Rabin, Mr. Hameline and Mr. Rousseau started manufacturing this prototype of educational robot with the 3D printing club students (since this one can be printed in 3D for the structural parts). We have almost finished the prototype and we would like to exploit this human and technological adventure with our 3rd year students who arrive at the first stage of their course choice.
The main goals of this plan would be both the discovery of a project approach and an immersion in the world of programming.
We are trying to set up an exchange with a Scottish school in Edinburgh that uses robots in class so as to develop our practice but also to exchange opinion with teachers and students about our methods.
ROBOTICAL is ready to welcome our students to explain to them how their 2016 project came true.
Besides, we would visit the robot manufacturing site near Glasgow about 40 minutes away.
This exchange would also allow our students to regularly practice English in writing before the stay, and then speak on site while in class with the Scots.
We plan to receive our Scottish guests as well before the end of 2019 in our high school to share our knowledge of 3D printing and furthermore to discover the region heritage.
Coding possibilities:

1- Concerned public / participants
School year: 2018-2019
# 3rd year pupils (4eme E and/or F) of Clément Janequin high school in Avrillé.
# Involved teachers: Mr. Rousseau (Mathematics), Mrs. Rivallin (Science), Mr. Hameline and Mrs. Rabin (Design and Technology).
# EDINBURGH School Georges Watson college
# Robotical (company)

2- Objectives / interests

• Discovering the project approach followed by a company
• Visiting Marty’s manufacturing factory
• Exchanging with a Scottish school
• Sharing programming educational experiences in the Scottish School
• Practising English through written and oral exchanges
• Opening to a different culture: Edinburgh, known as the “Athens of the North” for its Greco-Roman architectural style, has many faces (the medieval alleys of the “Old Town” and its castle contrast with the Georgian facades of the “New Town”.)
