Project Summary

A two-year project “Concept, Cooperation, Creation” was led in cooperation with three secondary schools from Poland, Romania and Turkey. The title of the project means in English creative interaction of thoughts, that is ideas on education between the partners. The aim of this cooperation was developing new innovative methods of teaching. In an era of globalisation and a universal access to any type of media, traditional teaching methods and methods for consolidation of acquired knowledge are not enough. Through cooperation in the project we wanted to enhance students’ motivation to learn, and consequently to prevent them from early school leaving. While implementing objectives of the project, we were taking advantage of the rich experience and the wide range of competences of the employees and students of our partner schools by exchanging experience and knowledge between the participants of the project. By carrying out various project activities, the teachers from partner schools worked out the innovative teaching methods. Each school was searching for diverse methods and forms of working. In each school the project was focused on the chosen problem. In Polish and Romanian schools the chosen issue was a broadly understood flying, from the ability to fly of the particular organisms to the present-day aviation. In Turkish schools the main task of the project was deepening the awareness of students living within the Bosporus region. Students, as “captains of Bosporus” were supposed to rediscover the region and understand its value both for Turkey and for other countries. The choice of the above-mentioned issues aimed to increase the number of students interested in sciences, history, art, and foreign languages, and to use the skills of students with learning problems. Students could choose tasks and find solutions on their own. These interests had been stimulated through the use of various innovative methods and through connecting different subjects. At the same time the participants could take the opportunity to deepen their experience in travelling by air or by ship, and in living at sea. They also increased their language competences within the scope of communication and presentation in a foreign language. All these thanks was achieved thanks to the short-term students’ exchanges organised in Poland, Turkey and Romania.
The innovative activities carried out during and between the exchanges include among others: Oxford debates, live classes at the airport and on boards, simulation game “At the airport”, Bosporus festival, meetings and interviews with the representatives of jobs connected with flying and travelling by ship (an astronaut, pilot, flight attendant, aircraft mechanic, air traffic controller, technical mechanic at the airport, customs control workers, etc. ). Students also visited places of work referred to particular jobs. Thanks to that they were given the true and fair view of what the jobs consisted in. The science-nature team took part in a series of trips dedicated to the observation of flying organisms and in scientific workshops concerning flight simulation. On the basis of their observations they created the multimedia presentation showing the essence of flight and physical rules governing it. There was an interesting lecture on bats after which the students went on a trip to the caves in order to observe these mammals. Apart from acquiring knowledge, students were developing technical and manual skills ( creation of aircrafts models, gathering photo documentation, processing of videos, designing posters, exhibitions, decorations). Within the framework of the project three activities connected with learning had taken place (in each partner school) and one activity connected with education for teachers. There was the meeting in Istanbul during which teachers and principals exchanged their knowledge on teaching methods (CLIL, open method, teaching via ICT).
Consequently, through the involvement of the large number of students a new level of teaching quality was achieved; multi-disciplinary approach to teaching, using various methods (informal learning, open method, project method, integrated subject-language CLIL education, research and development method ).Moreover, by assigning non-standard tasks to students, learning became a great adventure and encouragement to keep on being educated.
For all partner schools achievement of long-term advantages for project participant was the most essential element. We developed and implemented innovative methods of teaching; we equipped students with key skills, which let them function in the European society on their own. Our staff gained new professional contacts, and we will be able to keep on exchanging good practices and experience and to create new educational projects. In addition, we will still be able to enhance their language competences.
