Conclusions
This project aimed to reflect on the updating of tradition as a possibility of employment for young people who live in mountain areas or who wish to live in them.
The success stories we have known are based precisely on that. Let’s see the points they have in common:
- They look for traditional products and varieties.
- They locate the growing places that have been used throughout life.
- They use scientific knowledge to be able to work in the best possible way including both productivity and sustainability.
- They make very special products that are not for daily consumption. They assume that they cannot compete in supermarkets.
- Its sales spaces are tourist areas or specialized markets.
- They see themselves as entrepreneurs and as committed citizens as well as farmers.
And yet we have a huge problem.
Today the war in Ukraine is affecting the economy of all European countries. One of its critical points is the rise in energy prices that affects all sectors equally. In addition, Ukraine is the largest agricultural producer in Europe and what happens after and during the war makes this primary sector tremendously unstable.
We had the answer but they changed the question.
We will have to wait for this tragic conflict to end to find out if the options we took for granted continue to be so.
