Project Summary

Knowledge of English is a window on today’s world. The English language allows people to communicate with each other regardless of their nationality or place of residence. It may seem that everyone is aware of its importance. Nevertheless there are those among students who lack the motivation to acquire this key skill that is mastering a foreign language.
The aim of our project was to raise students’ motivation to learn English, in particular:

1.Encouraging students and teachers to use internet sources in English
2.Encouraging students to create content using internet sources in English
3.Increasing the frequency of use by students and teachers using internet sources in English
4.Encouraging students to participate in culture activities using English.
5.Encouraging students to express themselves on culture topics using English.
6.Showing students, teachers and parents the usefulness of English as a tool in school education and in learning a profession.
7.Making students, teachers and parents aware of the role of English in building social relations.
8.Making students, teachers and parents aware of the importance of English in the modern world of media and information, culture and entertainment, politics, work and career, study, tourism and travel.
9.Raising self-esteem and self-awareness of students that is related to the use of English
10.Breaking barriers in using English in speaking and writing.
11.Raising students’ motivation to work on four language skills: speaking, reading, writing and listening.

The project involved more than 450 students – participants aged 11-15. This group included students who are low-motivated to study, especially English. Students with disabilities were also included in the group. At the same time, highly motivated students were included in the project, who, through personal contact and helpful attitude to other project participants, ensured the building of social bonds and a positive “peer effect”.
The project also included language teachers, educational specialists and subject teachers, where English is practically applicable. They took part in international meetings and in local trainings.
Parents who took part in the project learned about the importance of the English language and about motivating their children to studying.
As part of the project, all schools conducted similar activities and perform similar tasks, some of them in international teams. Working on tasks, exchanging experiences and project results were managed with the use of IT technology and during international project meetings.

The project assumes the following activities:
Two international workshop meetings for teachers.
Two workshops for students – project participants.
Workshops for parents of students participating in the project.
English days at each school.
Erasmus Days.
Workshops for teachers of various subjects on motivating students.
Participation of students in cultural events, in which English plays a leading role.
Visits of students in places using English:
related to tourism
scientific and business institutions
related to culture
web quests about host countries
TED conferences regarding materials covered by the school curriculum.

To monitor and evaluate project progress and results, a system for gathering information and evaluating was developed. Surveys, interviews, statistical data and observation were tools that were used to obtain necessary information.
Participation in the project contributed to personal development and improvement of the quality of partner schools. Workshops for teachers provided educational staff with techniques aiming to motivate students and raise their self-esteem, familiarized teachers with an eclectic approach to language teaching, combining elements of various techniques and methods.
Thanks to mobility and direct contacts with project participants from other countries, students and school staff gained greater awareness of the value of European cultural heritage, saw the possibilities of planning their own development and education, including English and international contacts.
In addition, didactic resources developed in the project works such will be used in English lessons. Some project practices were included in regular schools’ routine.
