Project Summary
Project “Sugar? No, thank you!” was created as a continuation of the project “Body and mind – change your life”, which promoted a healthy lifestyle, based on a healthy diet based on regional cuisine, self-prepared meals and physical exercises. The implementation of this project showed that the biggest threat in the students’ daily diet are sweet and sweetened meals (fast food). Children and adolescents are addicted to sugar, which leads to obesity and dangerous diseases. That is why partner schools have decided on another project leading to changing bad habits, this time focusing on helping pupils to eliminate or at least reduce sugar from their daily diet. This in turn connects with providing children knowledge about one of the diseases of civilization, which is diabetes caused by obesity, which comes from the uncontrolled consumption of foods rich in sugar. The project is designed to raise awareness of the negative role of sugar as an addictive substance, which is used by producers of unhealthy food. Students, performing various tests, will prove how much sugar they consume on a daily basis in a conscious and unconscious way, both in sweets and seemingly non-sweet dishes, such as fast food. They will also learn that such a diet can lead to obesity and to diabetes. They will get to know what this disease is and what it can be a threat to life, especially if we do not realize, that we have fallen into it. Students working on the project will also look for an alternative to sweets and junk food. They will increase their knowledge about healthy diets, they will try to promote physical activity. The results (posters, presentations, films) will be developed using active methods, while improving the ability to use computer programs and digital tools. Students will also broaden their mathematical competence by developing research results, and increase their ability to use English, contact their peers online and during joint work during international meetings. In each partner country, a group of 15-30 pupils working on the project will be organized, but whole schools will be involved in the implementation of certain tasks. A very important part of the project will be the inclusion of pupils from areas adversely affecting the development of children and students with low achievements in the area of basic skills. The opportunity to work in international groups will broaden the horizons of these students, increase not only their level of knowledge, but also affect their level of ambition. Thanks to this they will plan a longer than planned and more ambitious educational path. Their level of tolerance towards other nations and cultures will also be raised.
