Project Summary
Who are we if we don’t know anything about where we come from, about our origins, family, language, and own culture? Understanding who we are is maybe one of life’s biggest questions. Knowing our history, roots, language and culture helps us construct our identity and a sense of belonging and awareness that leads us to realize who we really are and understand more deeply the importance and the richness of the other cultures. The project will be focused on four main priorities:
A) Open education and innovative practices in a digital era
B) Social and educational value of European cultural heritage
C) Promoting the acquisition of skills and competences
D) Promoting quality youth work.
The project focuses on: supporting the acquisition of skills and competences, for example by: improving the performance of students below average in science, history, geography and ICT skills, reading and writing through applying effective and innovative teaching methods; taking into account the aspect of IT competences in curricula, adapted to age groups; developing critical thinking, especially by teaching exact sciences in an appropriate environment and cultural context; the adoption of a holistic approach to teaching and learning languages, using the diversity of increasingly multilingual school environments.
As teachers we must take responsibility for the next generation not just to educate ourselves but to organize ourselves in making our own history and future. The aim of the OUR HERITAGE SHAPES OUR FUTURE is to search, investigate, discover and visit the monuments connect to the town of every European country participating in the project. The students will learn to identify the value and the meaning of those unique monuments – many of them are recognized by UNESCO as monuments of global heritage – and realize the responsibility for their preservation. One of the fun things about this heritage project is getting out and about because visit can inform young people about their past history, helping them to get a feel for the task at hand and develop an enthusiasm for it. The project will follow throughout the guided tours of the monument the past and the present of the participating countries. Alongside the descriptions of the monuments, the inscriptions, the armorials and the paintings, the project searches for the special features in every place, as they were formed throughout the history. Discovering the cultural Heritage of each country includes many different things from the past that we value and want to pass on to future generations. It could be people’s memories and experiences, community history, cultural traditions, or the history of languages and dialects. Or it could be something physical, like historic buildings and streets, archaeological sites, museum collections, the countryside, habitats and species, parks and cemeteries, or places and objects linked to our industrial, maritime and transport history. Young people often have a limited understanding of what heritage can be, and think that ‘It’s not for me’. Helping young people understand the word ‘heritage’ in their own terms is an important first step in getting them involved, Through this project the students will have the opportunity to exercise their logic and theιr synthetic thinking via the communication with places of unique cultural heritage and to form attitudes and behaviors in such a way that it will promote the aesthetics, the culture and the civilization. By local and regional trips our students will conduct scientific research, look for bibliographical sources, learn new ICT skills and digital techniques. During their research work they will learn a lot about the history of their own country and Europe, expanding their knowledge and arousing their own interests. We can create a connections among all the fields of science we are interested in. After the project the Interactive Map will be published in Open Educational Resources (OER) for wider use even after the end of the project. Moreover The OUR HERITAGE SHAPES OUR FUTURE” project will give the students the opportunity to practice the English language both orally and in a written way in real historical contexts. This is a key feature of our project as it will help the low-income students who may not have the opportunity of visiting English speaking countries and of not having strong language models to support them. Making heritage relevant to the here and now is vital to engaging our students. A focus on cultural identity or the individuals and events that shaped their communities is often appealing, and relating to others can be easy. For example, comparing the lives of teenagers now and a century ago could lead to an interest in the history of fashion, politics or culture. For this reason we believe that local projects can be connected with global issues concerning young people.
