Project Summary

“Design your Waste” (DYW) is an environmental focused project coordinated by APLM (Association pour la Protection de l’Enviroment) in partnership with NICOLA (New International Company of Live Arts) Italy and Dirección Xeral de Xuventude e Voluntariado (Galicia, Spain). It aims to provide knowledge and awareness to youth about the products life-cycle and the impact generated by one-use consumption pattern. In order to change this model, we will train youngsters and youth workers in reutilisation techniques and tools, and innovative design. Throughout the project design prototypes will be created by the youngsters and will serve as an inspirational model. The learning outcomes will be available through our website under creative commons license for free use.The project is divided in two phases: one to bring awareness and knowledge to both youngsters and youth workers and a second one where waste design activities and entrepreneurship training are developed.Design your waste is thought to be a pilot project to unite waste and recycling issues with arts, design and entrepreneurship. The direct target group are underqualyfied youngsters coming from deprived areas. The main goals achieved can be divided in three points: 1. Raising awareness about waste management and reciclying2. providing entrepreneurship skills to youngsters 3. Developing creating ideas and to generate new products from waste.DYW intends to generate a new model for youngsters and society in general where products and materials are not seen as finite, but as potential new objects to be used and not thrown away. With this project we aim to provide a tool for change, a different approach to consumption patterns already learnt. Also, it is our intention to raise awareness and provide clear evidence on how waste materials are destroying the environment, whilst giving simple guidelines to prevent this harmful impact.
